Remembering Ann Derr

Posted in:
Fighter pilot “Dutch” Scnonenberg.
Audrey Ann Voskamp, the first of three children, was born in 1921, to the Ardnie and Leila Voskamp of New Ulm Texas. Ann, as she was known, grew up speaking German and did not learn English until she began elementary school in New Ulm. Her father worked as the local postman, but maintained a farm with the aid of his wife and children. Ann saw to the animals, milking the cows daily, and was helped by her younger brother when he was old enough. Her younger sister and mother tended the garden. Between his job and the small farm, Mr. Voskamp managed to survive the Great Depression and feed and clothe his wife and three children, as well as help support his younger siblings and his mother. When she advanced to high school, Ann spent weekdays in Columbus with her uncle, Louis Voskamp, and his wife, who owned the local meat market that was later, bought by Jerry Mikeska.
