CHENNAI: Continuing the measures to honour late leader J Jayalalithaa, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday opened her Poes Garden residence as a memorial. After paying floral tributes at her portrait placed there, the Chief Minister cut the ribbon to declare open Veda Nilayam as a memorial. However, the public will not be allowed to view the memorial until the Madras High Court gives the green signal.

The Centre has urged the Tamil Nadu government to revoke its order of permitting 100 per cent occupancy in cinemas/theatres/multiplexes even as major films are being planned for release on January 14 on the occasion of the Pongal festival.

The Election Commission has already started gearing up for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections due in May 2021, starting with the babus who will be on election duty. In a recent letter to the state Chief Electoral Officer Sathyabrata Sahoo and Chief Secretary K Shanmugam, the Election Commission has stressed the need for effective transfer of officers who have completed three years and to ensure that no officer is posted in their native district.
Officers who are retiring within six months and those who are facing disciplinary actions recommended by the EC for earlier poll duty lapses should not be designated for poll duty. Further, officials who will complete three years in an election-related post before May 31 should be transferred.

Chennai's Vandalur Zoo to be upgraded to global standards, mulls tie-up with Wellington Zoo

CHENNAI: The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has selected the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, popularly known as Vandalur Zoo, in Chennai among the top 10 zoos in the country to be upgraded to 'global standards'.
Last year, the CZA had set up a 13-member committee headed by Rajesh Gopal, secretary-general of the Global Tiger Forum, which submitted a report recently after which the selection was made with the help of a private consultant. The committee had experts from the CZA, former chief wildlife wardens of some states, landscape architects who specialize in zoo designing and veterinarians, among others. The committee had held a couple of meetings and is now preparing a 10 year "vision plan".
