LIVE | Funeral service for jazz legend Jonas Gwangwa

The funeral service will be held at Christ King Anglican Church in Sophiatown and streamed on YouTube.
The family said in a statement: "As the family, we are conscious of the negative role that funerals play in spreading the virus, thus we will strictly adhere to relevant regulations and contribute positively to the country's fight against the Covid-19 regulations pandemic. We request and will appreciate your support for social distancing, masking and sanitising. The church service will be streamed online via YouTube link, which will be accessible even after Friday."
In a special message shared on President Cyril Ramaphosa's Twitter page, Jonas was remembered as a "giant of our revolutionary cultural movement and our democratic creative industries".

The funeral service of Jonas Gwangwa is underway at the Christ King Anglican Church in Sophiatown.
Due to the Covid-19 regulations that only allow 50 people to attend funerals, very few people have attended the service.
The Jazz legend has been honoured with a special provincial state funeral.
He died on Saturday 23 January, the day Hugh Masekela and Oliver Mtukudzi died in 2018 and 2019.

JAZZ legend Jonas Gwangwa was laid to rest at Fourways Cemetery in Joburg on Friday 29 January.
The burial took place in the early hours of the morning and was attended by close relatives only.
When the funeral service which was held at the Christ King Anglican Church in Sophiatown began, there was no coffin.
And due to the Covid-19 regulations that only allow 50 people to attend funerals, extra people such as journalists and the police had to stand outside.

Legendary jazz icon and activist Jonas Gwangwa, who died on Saturday last week, will be honoured with a special provincial state funeral.
Gwangwa, who died aged 83, will be laid to rest on Friday, and the funeral service will be streamed live on YouTube, the family said in a statement.
The funeral service will be held at Christ King Anglican Church, 49 Ray Street, Sophiatown, from 9am. The family has appealed to the public not to join them in sending the jazz icon off due to the Covid-19 regulations that only allow 50 people to attend funerals.
