Review: Everything We're Living For - Neil Bennetts

Reviewed by Tony Cummings
Sometimes Cross Rhythms reviewers, in their passion to see contemporary worship move away from the formulaic to adapt adventurous new musical approaches, forget the truism that a worship album is first and foremost about the quality of the songs and specifically whether those songs have the potential to connect with acts of congregational worship. Although we may want our worship albums to have The Edge-style guitar pyrotechnics or drum 'n' bass rhythms or our worship singers to sing at least better than the questionable pitching of Scripture In Song or the semi-musical rasp of a Graham Kendrick, it's primarily the memorability of melody and the apposite resonance of the lyrics which should decide whether or not a worship album gets a thumbs up or thumbs down review. Neil Bennetts has been slowly but surely building a reputation as an exceptional songwriter and worship leader. His work at Trinity Cheltenham and his regular worship leading at the New Wine event has made this, his first "solo" album, long overdue and what a delight it is. At least three songs here, Neil's new melody to that classic hymn lyric "Great Redeemer" ("O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing"), the catchy "Name Above All Names" (with guest Eoghan Heaslip) and the wistfully beautiful "O Perfect Love" show that Neil is a master of his songwriting craft and the songs here will surely bring many into the presence of God in the years ahead. Now my opening preamble shouldn't lead potential buyers to think that this album lacks production values. In fact the choice of studio maestro Trevor Michael was an inspired one as Trevor, whose previously delivered edgy rock delights for Superhero and [crave] has been able to bring some guitar bite into the proceedings and stop Neil's wistful, lilting music ever becoming soporific. Also spectacular is the beautiful interplay between the rhythm section and the strings arranged by Keith Getty. It's taken way too long for CR to get around to reviewing this gem. Hopefully, many discerning church goers have already discovered the quality of this album.

Review: Strong Hand Of Love: A Tribute To Mark Heard - Various

Reviewed by James Lewis
Mark Heard, as you may know, died some two years ago, leaving his wife and daughter with massive medical bills not covered by medical insurance. This album is a benefit for the Heard Family Fund made up of freshly recorded covers of his songs together with a few previously released samples of his writing talents. For your money, you get 17 tracks filling up the CD to capacity and they're all well worth it. (Confusingly, you get less tracks on the cassette version but two tracks that aren't on the CD!) Mark was acknowledged by his peers, if not by his record sales, as a master songwriter and the quality material here is given the treatment it deserves. Artists here include names familiar to CCM fans together with names you may have only heard of in Cross Rhythms. Bruce Cockburn, The Call's Michael Been, Victoria Williams, Vigilantes Of Love, Tonio K, Julie Miller, The Choir and DC Talker, Kevin Smith amongst others all contribute their versions of Mark Heard songs. Some of the versions here are faithful to the original versions, like Bruce Carroll's bittersweet country "Castaway" and some versions veer wildly away from the roots orientated sound that Mark explored every variation of, like Michael Been's heavy rock "We Know Too Much". It seems unfair to the others to single out any tracks particularly but Kevin Smith delivers a stunning mellow dancebeat-rock version of "Lonely Moon", which perhaps showcases a slightly more mature direction, and the specially reformed Chagall Guevara (Steve Taylor and co) do "Treasure Of The Broken Land" - if their one and only album had all sounded this good it might have been a classic. Buying this album will stone a multitude of birds at once - 1) it helps a bereaved family (James 1v27), 2) provides an excellent sampler of some of the talent out there for those only acquainted with the likes of Amy Grant, Petra and Michael W Smith, 3) makes a fitting tribute to a man of artistic and personal integrity. If you only buy one album this year, this one should be a strong contender for your money.

Review: Whispered And Shouted - Aaron Shust

Reviewed by Mark Vyner
The second album from the US worship leader whose first was an American mega hit. This is one of those worship albums that has the kind of production that makes you want to give a copy to your church worship leaders and get them to learn a few of the tracks. It's very much high energy guitar-driven rock, almost grunge at times, with some standout songs just waiting to be sung in churches. Shust's gravelly voice suits the modern worship style well. The album opens with a huge guitar riff and a song with lyrics taken from all over the Bible (and quoted in the liner notes) with the refrain setting the tone for the album "Long live the one who gives us life and peace for tomorrow." Each song has a useful set of notes explaining how it came to be written and what it's trying to say. The third track "Create Again" is superb, a standout with a great big anthemic chorus that is shouting out to be sung in church! It's a song of response to creation, "God of everything I see, come create again in me." Not every song is congregationally orientated - "Watch Over Me" is the song of a broken, lonely person recognising that God is watching over them, and "I Will Wait" is a response to faith being tested. One or two songs stray into the AOR territory inhabited by so many faceless worship songs, losing the freshness which differentiates a lot of this album from the crowd. But there are enough standouts to make this well worth giving to your worship leader.

Review: Seasons - Tori Harper | Cross Rhythms

Reviewed by Tony Cummings
After a period of crisis when the world wide slump in music sales seemed to stymie the US CCM industry, it is now back to what it knows best and discovering top rate church-based young talent, and putting them with the impressive enclave of Nashville's young and hungry producers to make music which connects with America's Christian radio audience. This debut EP from Tori Harper is very impressive I've little doubt that the 19-year-old will go on to big things. Taking a cue from Psalm 16:11, "Joy", produced by Colby Wedgeworth (Jordan Feliz, Mandisa) is already a US Christian radio hit while the title track, overseen by Grammy winner Seth Mosley (For King & Country, Skillet) and Mike "X" O'Conner (Colton Dixon, Brandon Heath), sounds like it, too, will soon be getting airplay. The production throughout is skilfully executed electro pop, Tori's voice is pure-toned and her lyrics uplifting but never clichéd. Yep, Nashville has another potential CCM star.
