Tencent updates system that kicks off 17.84 million kid gamers per day with 'midnight patrol', Digital News

July 13, 2021
Tencent is integrating a system that tries to pinpoint kids who are violating Chinese laws regulating the time allowed playing mobile games.

Imagine, if you will, a neighbourhood watch patrolling cyberspace in the dead of night, searching out ne’er-do-wells lurking in the dead of night.
Except, these culprits sneaking around are kids, using an adult’s accounts to play games at night and skirt China’s anti-gaming addiction rules.
On Tuesday (July 13), the Chinese gaming giant Tencent launched an update to its neighbourhood watch with a programme called “midnight patrol”, which aims to seek out accounts that may be kids, and then use facial recognition technology to verify their identity.

How Animal Crossing became a place of protest in China and Hong Kong

The politics of play in China and Hong Kong.
2 May 2021
On New Year's Day 2020 I attended a protest march. My friend, a Croatian journalist covering the technology beat for The South China Morning Post, and I, a visitor passing through, left her apartment around noon. Following a fortifying meal of phở we joined the thousands thronging the streets of Wanchai, on the central island of Hong Kong.
Many of the protestors were dressed in black. It was even a family affair for some, with three generations turning up for the march. In Cantonese they chanted, "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our era!" It was a chorus sung by all, but most vocally by the young. They were creative: on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day hundreds had occupied malls and shopping areas, with many wearing reindeer antlers. In November, university campuses had transformed into fortresses with the student protestors using tables and umbrellas as bulwarks.

Tencent has placed pro gaming at the heart of its ambition to dominate online entertainment.

At the height of the global pandemic in October, more than 6 000 people packed into a new 25-acre stadium in Shanghai to watch one of the world’s biggest sporting contests. Another 45 million tuned in online, about as many as watched the six games of the 2020 NBA Finals on TV. The matchup was the League of Legends world championship — a watershed moment for competitive gaming and its organiser Tencent.
Asia’s most valuable company has set its sights on a billion-dollar esports arena that already boasts more regular viewers than the National Basketball Association or the National Football League. Tencent has placed pro gaming at the heart of its ambition to dominate online entertainment, from mobile games and video streaming to social media. It’s betting that esports will entice and retain the internet audiences it needs and eventually grow to something approaching the $10-billion-plus NBA.

College dropout becomes billionaire with Chinese gaming platform

As China’s Internet use shifted from desktop to mobile, Huang realised there wasn’t a Steam-style community dedicated to smartphone gamers. TapTap was born in 2016 and has been free to use from the outset. — AFP
When China’s two big mobile powers clashed publicly on New Year’s Eve, the stock of a little-known gaming company surged the most ever, minting a new billionaire in 38-year-old maverick entrepreneur Huang Yimeng.
Shares in his indie game distributor XD Inc rose 24% on the first trading day of 2021 after Huawei Technologies Co temporarily removed all Tencent Holdings Ltd games from its app store in a dispute over their revenue split. Investors flocked to the ByteDance Ltd-backed creator of TapTap – a Steam-like download service for games that bypasses the dominant app stores – on the sign of schism between China’s big two.

Tencent Holdings, the world's largest video games company by revenue, saw remarkable growth in 2020, but it now finds itself on the defensive, trying to tap into new gaming genres as large tech rivals and gaming upstarts chip away at its empire.
The Shenzhen-based company, which gets a third of its revenue from gaming, invested in 29 video game companies last year, three times more than in 2019. Tencent also pulled in more than US$2.6 billion from each of its two biggest mobile games, PUBG Mobile and Honour of Kings, a first for any gaming company, according to app tracking firm Sensor Tower.
