Nigeria lost over 2,000 citizens to worsening insecurity in the first quarter of 2021, Civil Society Organisations have said.
The Joint Action Civil Society Coalition, comprising 125 nongovernmental organisations berated the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for its inability to curtail the disturbing security challenges confronting the nation.
The CSOs stated this in a joint statement titled, “State of the Nation: A Call to President Muhammadu Buhari to stop the bleeding and take action to end the carnage,” made available to one of our correspondents in Abuja on Sunday.

Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria have petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, stop the escalating security concerns in the country.
They further alarmed that the first quarter of 2021 witnessed an all-time high fatalities mass atrocity incidences across the country.
The petitio signed by the Joint Action Civil Society Coalition/Nigeria Mourns Secretariat and made available to
Vanguard revealed that “Following its sharp increase of 43 per cent in mass atrocities 2020, Nigeria has continued to experience a decline in security across the nation. In the first quarter of 2021 (January to March), we recorded an all-time quarterly high of almost 2000 fatalities from mass atrocities incidents across the country. This week, across the 6 geopolitical zones, there were escalated combustions of violence resulting in even more deaths.

In her opening remark at the event,the 
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development,, Sadiya Umar Farouq, expressed joy that,”This third meeting is representative of the extent of work that the National Steering Committee has done thus far, as we have finally reached the stage where programme implementation can commence.”
“We believe that your participation and contribution will be invaluable to the success of the Alternate School Programme,”the minister told the new members.
Farouq recalled that:”The National Steering Committee, at its inaugural meeting, moved for the establishment of a Technical Working Group to ensure effective planning and implementation of the ASP, with representatives drawn from the NSC member institutions and other key organisations.

Nat'l steering committee plots roadmap for alternate school programme

THE National Steering Committee on Alternate School Programme held its inaugural meeting yesterday in Abuja. The meeting, according to a statement by Nneka Anibeze, Special Assistant to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, “set the ball rolling for mapping out strategies and an action plan to address the challenges of out-of-school children in Nigeria and to rapidly reduce the number by providing them with quality basic education and skills in special settings  not addressed in a conventional school system.”
“In her opening remarks, the co- chairperson, convener of the meeting and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq  said that Nigeria topped the list of out-of-school children in the world, hence the decision of the federal government to develop strategic plans by the recently  inaugurated Steering Committee, “the statement read.

The National Steering Committee on Alternate School Programme held its inaugural meeting, on Monday, as part of ongoing efforts aimed at addressing challenges facing out-of-school children in Nigeria.
Members of the committee who met in Abuja mapped out strategies and action plan to address the challenges of out-of-school children in Nigeria and to rapidly reduce the number by providing them with quality basic education and skills in special settings not addressed in a conventional school system.
