Stefania Sandrelli play Nino and Caterina who have been married for sixty-five years and have been deeply in love since the moment their eyes first met. Upon Caterina’s death, in the hope of helping her father move past the loss of the woman he’s loved all his life, their daughter puts him in touch with Amicangelo, an editor who aspires to be a novelist, with a view to the latter using her father’s memories to write a book about her parents’ love. Atlas tells the tale of Allegra (
Matilda De Angelis, currently starring in HBO miniseries
The Undoing alongside Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant), a young climbing enthusiast who is the victim of a terrorist attack which claims the lives of her friends. During her long and arduous journey to overcome fear, Allegra meets a young refugee from the Middle East called Arad (
Helmi Dridi). The film is set to be sold by Vision Distribution at Berlinâs European Film Market (1-5 March).

Cineuropa: Did the idea for
Atlas come from a real-life event?
NiccolÃ² Castelli: In 2011, there was an attack in Marrakech which left 17 people dead, including three people from my own region, Ticino. It was an event which rocked the tranquillity of our neutral country, where nothing had happened for centuries and where you felt like you were living in a protective bubble. I wanted to work on this loss of virginity, on how we face up to fear of the other, which has taken an even stronger hold following the killings in Paris and Belgium. Then I met the girl whoâd survived the actual attack; she spoke a lot about the trauma sheâd suffered post-event and I realised I was interested in telling the story from her point of view, portraying her own return to life. We began developing the film in 2013. In terms of the later versions of the script, I wrote one last draft in Belgium with

Matilda De Angelis, a rising star on the Italian film scene who is currently starring in the cast of the HBO mini-series
The Undoing alongside Nicole Kidman) is in Morocco when she, her partner and a couple of friends become the victims of an horrific terrorist attack. She is the only one to survive. Her body, despite its wounds, is slowly beginning to heal, but the trauma which engulfs her is relentlessly all-consuming. Fear and a thirst for revenge are the only emotions driving her forwards, pushing her towards a world of solitude and incomprehension. Left numb by her family and friends’ efforts to ease her suffering, Allegra is determined to face this personal trauma alone, despite everyone seemingly wanting to share in it.
