2021 EuroLeague Playoffs at a glance

The
2020-21 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs feature eight fearsome teams. Five of them are former champs and all four teams from the last Final Four are back. There are also two playoff newcomers hoping to get to the Final Four for the first time. Let's have a glance at the four best-of-five series in store for us.
The playoff showdown between top-ranked Barcelona and eighth-placed Zenit will be between two of the finest defenses in the league. While Barcelona allowed the fewest points in the league this season (73.6 ppg.), Zenit was second (74.9). Game 1 of the series will mark just the fifth time these teams have ever played each other; Barcelona won three of the four games to date. Barcelona finished atop the regular-season standings with a 24-10 record and had three winning streaks of at least five games this season, but lost two of its last three games to finish the season. Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius's side is 12-5 at home this season. Zenit, which won three in a row to finish the regular season in eighth place with a 20-14 record, had a winning record (10-7) on the road this season. Its coach, Xavi Pascual, should feel comfortable in Barcelona, too; he spent nine seasons on the sidelines at Palau Blaugrana, led Barcelona to the 2010 EuroLeague crown and coached Jasikevicius during the 2012-13 season.

The race for the playoffs is hotter than ever in the most competitive Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season in history and several rivals will meet head-to-head in Round 30. Here is what you need to look out for in this week’s games.
Zenit seeks home comfort
With key victories last week by TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and Valencia Basket coupled with defeats for Real Madrid, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, Zenit St Petersburg and Zalgiris Kaunas, the playoff race has further intensified with those six teams now separated by just two wins. And a couple of them square off in Round 30’s opening tip on Thursday when host Zenit (16-12) attempts to bounce back into form against Baskonia (15-14), which aims to maintain momentum following a victory over FC Bayern Munich.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul was in rare form on Thursday in trouncing Khimki Moscow Region for its eighth straight win. While it would be an exaggeration to say that what Fenerbahce is doing under Coach Igor Kokoskov in their first season together is something never-before-seen, many things his charges accomplished in Moscow have not been seen in more than a decade.
The club had the second-best two-point shooting night in EuroLeague history by making 29 of 34 two-pointers (85.3%). The best ever – 87.5% by Panathinaikos Athens against EWE Baskets Oldenburg – was in 2009. Four Fenerbahce players posted performance index ratings of at least 23 - Lorenzo Brown (25), Nando De Colo (23), Dyshawn Pierre (26), Jan Vesely (27). The last time that happened in a EuroLeague game was 11 years ago. Together they helped the club record a collective PIR of 155, which tied the ninth-best ever in the competition and smashed the Fenerbahce record of 143, which it set as Ulker against Kinder London Towers in October 2001!

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul vs. TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz

Fenerbahce sets club assist record with Baskonia rout
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul had its best offensive performance of the season as it extended its winning streak to four games by beating visiting TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 96-76 on Tuesday night. Both teams now hold 9-10 records, but Fenerbahce claimed the potential head-to-head tiebreaker with this 20-point win. Fenerbahce took the lead for good early and had its first double-digit margin after 10 minutes. Jan Vesely and Nando De Colo paced the hosts, but Baskonia fought to keep in touch in the first half. But Fenerbahce had a strong finish to the second quarter and a good defensive start of the third, increasing the margin to 60-44 and never looking back as it went on to set a club record with 29 assists. De Colo netted a season-high 27 points, Vesely had 17 and Lorenzo Brown scored 14 points in the victory. Alec Peters paced Baskonia with 15 points, while Zoran Dragic and Achille Polonara had 12 points apiece in a losing effort.

Versatile Vesely and collective distribution fired Fenerbahce

After losing three games in a row, including a humiliating 99-62 thrashing against Zalgiris Kaunas in the previous round, it is fair to say that Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul was absolutely desperate to bounce back with a win when Olympiacos Piraeus visited the Turkish metropolis on Wednesday. Achieving that aim against a dangerous Olympiacos team was bound to require a big effort from Fenerbahce’s key players, so it was fortunate that Jan Vesely – still the reigning EuroLeague MVP – was able to return to action after missing the last three games through injury.
And Vesely did not let anyone down. For starters, he was the game’s joint leading scorer with 17 points after making all 8 of his two-point attempts, many of which were rim-shattering dunks in his time-honored fashion. But there was a lot more to Vesely’s performance than scoring because he also filled the stats sheet with 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot to accrue a performance index rating of 29.
