COIMBATORE: A sub-inspector of police was placed under suspension on Monday after a video of him beating up customers and employees of a restaurant at Gandhipuram on Sunday night went viral on social media.
B Mohanraj of Ram Nagar owns Sri Raja Hotel at Gadhipuram. Around 10pm on Sunday, a cop from Kattoor police station came to the restaurant and told Mohanraj to down the shutters immediately as inspector Latha would be coming for night patrol. As the customers were having dinner in the restaurant, he kept the shutter half-closed.
Around 10.20pm, sub-inspector Muthu, 36, attached to the Kattoor (law & order) police, entered the restaurant with a baton in hand.

Chennai has 36% of active cases in Tamil Nadu, infection spreading fast | Coimbatore News

CHENNAI: Public health officials on Monday warned that Chennai, the worst affected district, could run out of oxygen beds as Tamil Nadu reported 6,711 new cases and 19 deaths. The state had 46,308 active cases after 2,339 people were discharged.
For the second consecutive day, Chennai reported more than 2,000 cases. The hotspot city had 2,105 new cases and 17,098 active cases -- 36% of those cases under treatment in the state. While senior officials met at the secretariat with plans to ramp up testing, aggressively enforce pandemic protocols, keep a check on stock of life saving drugs, and initiate early treatment, hospital administrators were keeping a tab on the number of beds and redirecting patients with mild or no symptoms either to home quarantine or to covid care centres.

COIMBATORE: Tension gripped in Coimbatore after a Hindu Munnani functionary was assaulted with an iron rod by two unidentified men on Saturday night.
The injured man has been identified as S Ramakrishnan, 36, of Thayammal Layout at Podanur. He is the vice-president of Hindu Munnani unit in Ukkadam. Ramakrishnan, who suffered injuries on his head, was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
Police said Ramakrishnan, who was engaged in catering work, was returning home from Kempatti Colony on his motorcycle around 10.30pm. When he reached Sundarapuram Junction, two men waylaid him and assaulted him with an iron rod.

Bengaluru techie, family members among five killed in road accidents near Tirupur | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Five people have died in two road accidents in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu since Saturday night.
Three members of a family, including a six- year-old girl, died on the spot when a truck rammed their car on the Kamanaickenpalayam -Palladam Road on Sunday morning.
The deceased have been identified as V Karthikeyan, 36, of Vallakundapuram village near Dhali, his wife K Saranya, 33, and their daughter K Dhanya, 6. Karthikeyan was working as a software engineer in Bengaluru.
The family came to their native village a few days ago. The accident happened around 9.20am when they were returning to Bengaluru. Before ramming their car, the truck had hit another car. The passengers of the first other car escaped without injuries.

DMK candidate says he was assaulted by AIADMK men in Thondamuthur constituency | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: DMK candidate in Thondamuthur assembly constituency Karthikeya Sivasenapathy on Tuesday alleged that he was assaulted by AIADMK men outside a polling in Selvapuram. Tension gripped outside the polling station after the members of the two parties clashed with each other.
Sivasenapathy visited a polling station at the government primary school in Selvapuram in the morning to check polling. While he was returning, Sivasenapathy was surrounded by AIADMK and BJP cadres. They raised slogans against him.
DMK cadre rescued Sivasenapathy from the crowd. A clash erupted between the members of the AIADMK and the DMK. The police intervened and pacified them.

Coimbatore: The high decibel canvassing of votes for the 2021 assembly polls came to end at 7pm on Sunday, as candidates ended the campaign with a punch.
Political parties opted for everything from bike rallies to processions and additional poll promises, hoping to leave a mark on the minds of the voters. DMK’s N Karthik and BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan organized two-wheeler rallies, while the MNM had its top boss’ daughter Akshara dancing to the beats of a music band during a door-to-door campaign with aunt Suhashini Maniratnam.
AIADMK’s S P Velumani, accompanied by his son, made a fervent plea to the residents of his locality to vote for him. The Congress had its general secretary Gundu Rao accompanying the party’s lone candidate in the district, Mayura Jayakumar, for the last leg of campaign at Puliyakulam. Coimbatore MP and veteran left leader P R Natarajan also joined the Congress leaders in the campaign.

Data furnished by the Union minister of state for external affairs, V Muraleedharan in the Lok Sabha last week, revealed that 4,355 students from Tamil Nadu travelled abroad for studies in January and February this year. Tamil Nadu accounted for 6%of of the total number of students who went to foreign countries for higher studies this year.

Cash, gold stolen from Tirupur businessman's home | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: Unidentified people broke open a house at K Chettipalayam on the Dharapuram Road in Tirupur city and escaped with 120 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs 28 lakh in cash.
The burglary happened in the house of A Shabiullah, 54. Shabiullah, who runs a screen printing unit, is the secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Amateur Kabaddi Association.
Shabiullah, his wife and son went to Ooty on April 2. On Monday morning, his younger brother A Hithayatullah found the main door lock broken open. He alerted the Tirupur city police and his elder brother.
Tirupur city police commissioner G Karthikeyan said three special teams had been formed to nab the burglars. One of the teams was collecting CCTV footages from nearby buildings.
