Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, who had overseen the government's fight against drug gangs and guerrillas, died Tuesday of coronavirus complications. He was 69.
Trujillo is the highest-ranking Colombian official and one of nearly a dozen sitting cabinet ministers worldwide to have succumbed to the virus that has killed at least 2.1 million people since the outbreak began in China in December 2019.
Trujillo's death prompted messages of grief and sympathy from near and far, even the government of the United States and the UN.

Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo died from COVID-19 complications on Tuesday. He was 69. President Ivan Duque said that Holmes Trujillo died early Tuesday and offered his condolences to Holmes Trujillo's wife, children and other family members.

Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo died Tuesday of coronavirus complications, the country's president announced. He was 69.
Trujillo is one of about a dozen sitting cabinet ministers worldwide to have succumbed to the virus that has killed at least 2.1 million people since the outbreak began in China in December 2019.
He was hospitalized in Bogota on January 11 and admitted to intensive care four days later after suffering "acute lung function deterioration," according to the defense ministry.
Colombian President Ivan Duque said on Twitter that Trujillo had died at dawn from complications due to Covid-19.

Bogota [Colombia], January 26 (ANI/Sputnik): Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo died of COVID-19 on Tuesday, his brother Jose Renan Trujillo said.
"With deep sorrow, I learned of the death of my brother. He fought for his convictions and died defending them," the minister's brother confirmed on Twitter.
The minister was hospitalized on January 13 in Bogota, the capital of Colombia, after testing positive with COVID-19.
Trujillo was a Colombian politician and diplomat. During his professional career, he served as education and interior minister, ambassador to the Organization of American States and the European Union, as well as to a number of countries, including Russia.

BOGOTA, Colombia — Colombian Defense Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo, one of the country’s most recognized conservative politicians, has died from complications of Covid-19. He was 69.
President Ivan Duque said in a televised address that Trujillo died early Tuesday, adding that he “couldn’t express the pain” he was feeling over the news. He offered his condolences to Trujillo’s wife, children and other family members.
“His life was a reflection of vocation for public service,” Duque said.
Trujillo became defense minister in November 2019, after serving as foreign minister. He was also the mayor of Cali from 1988-1990 and held several ministerial and diplomatic positions during his decades-long political career.
