Astronauts come home with rare pre-dawn splashdown
Four astronauts strapped into their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, undocked from the International Space Station and plunged to a fiery pre-dawn splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, closing out the first operational flight of SpaceX's futuristic touch-screen ferry ship.
Crew-1 commander Michael Hopkins, along with NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Shannon Walker and Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi, disconnected from the space-facing port of the station's forward Harmony module at 8:35 p.m. EDT Saturday.
That set up only the second piloted water landing for NASA's post-shuttle commercial crew program and just the third night splashdown in space history — the first in nearly 45 years.

Four astronauts were strapped to their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, disembarked from the International Space Station and plunged into a pre-dawn flight in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, stopping the first operational flight of a futuristic SpaceX ferry.
First Crew Commander Michael Hopkins, along with NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and Japanese astronaut Soishi Noguchi, parted from the port facing space in the Harmony unit before the station at 8:35 p.m. EST. Saturday.
This created the second test water landing for NASA’s post-shuttle commercial crew program and only the third night in space history – the first in nearly 45 years.

Orange County students thrilled to speak with International Space Station Commander Michael Hopkins

TUSTIN, Calif. (KABC) -- Students from Red Hill Lutheran School in Tustin got their chance to ask the commander of the International Space Station questions on what it's like to be in space.
Ethan Javert was one of the first students to ask Commander Michael Hopkins a question. He asked what goes through his mind when taking off.
"Hi Ethan, that could be a very scary time when you're taking off because you're sitting on lots of fuel there. It's basically a controlled explosion," Hopkins said.
Hopkins and the kids were able to communicate using ham radio technology. It took about a year of planning for the the kids to have a few minutes with the astronaut.
