Everything you need to know about Consuelo, Dowager Duchess of Manchester's tiara - The Manchester Tiara

Chronicle / Alamy Stock Photo
With its heart-shaped motif, it would be easy to assume that the Manchester tiara was born of a passionate love affair. Sadly, this is not the case. It was made by Cartier for Consuelo, Dowager Duchess of Manchester in 1903. Consuelo Yznaga, the daughter of a wealthy Cuban-American landowner, had married Viscount George Montagu, the future 8th Duke of Manchester, in 1876. American heiresses marrying fortune-seeking European aristocrats was not uncommon at this time and they later became known at 'Buccaneers' thanks to Edith Wharton’s namesake book published in 1938. Consuelo’s own goddaughter - Consuelo Vanderbilt - became the most well-known of these so-called 'Dollar Princesses', by marrying Charles Spencer-Churchill, 9th Duke of Marlborough, in 1895, when she arrived in England with enough wealth to renovate Blenheim Palace.
