An exclusive first look at Botswana’s grand new safari camp, a spectacular monument to a travel industry tycoon
23 February 2021 - 20:22 By David Pilling
Stanley Tollman’s instructions were clear. Build a safari lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and make it the finest of its type in the world.
“The brief was simple,” says Anton de Kock, the architect engaged for the task. “Mr Tollman said: ‘I want an extraordinary camp. I want an extraordinary experience.’ That was the word: ‘extraordinary’. And knowing Mr T, it had to be the best of the best.”..

HP Business Class: John Anderson from Contiki

HP Business Class: John Anderson from Contiki

Contiki buses usually don't attract much attention from people in their 80s. But every time John Anderson sees one, he smiles. That's because Contiki was his brainchild, way back in 1962.
"I always wave because I think to myself, if it wasn't for me, you wouldn't be having the time of your life."
Anderson built the business out of necessity. He'd arrived in London with plans to see Europe, but without the cash to make it happen. A born entrepreneur, he posted a notice saying he had "just two seats left" on a non-existent camping tour of the continent. His ploy worked, and he quickly had the numbers he needed to make it happen.

Overseas travel was a rite of passage for heaps of young Aussies. What will replace it?

When I was travelling in Europe one time (yes, pre-pandemic) I heard a joke among some British friends.
They said when you meet an Australian traveller, you'd better be careful about offhandedly offering them hospitality, or saying they should pop round for a cuppa - cos Aussies overseas will *definitely* take you up on it, and sooner or later you'll end up with an eager backpacker on your doorstep, wondering which couch they'll be sleeping on and what's for dinner.
"That whole backpacking spirit was really a part of Australians' DNA," says Chris Zeiher from Lonely Planet.
"The idea of just hopping from place to place and making up your own itinerary as you go along was a rite of passage for so many young Australians."
