UA Little Rock Survey Research Center Partners with Division of Agriculture to investigate impact of feral hogs

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Survey Research Center and the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture are teaming up to evaluate the impact of feral hogs in Arkansas.
The UA Little Rock Survey Research Center will be mailing surveys to landowners in four areas over 12 counties with ongoing feral swine pilot projects. They include Ashley, Arkansas, Drew, Hempstead, Howard, Sevier, Yell, Logan, Sebastian, Marion, Baxter, and Izard counties.
“We are working with the Division of Agriculture to assess the economic impact of feral hogs in Arkansas,” said Dr. Derek Slagle, director of the Survey Research Center and assistant professor of public administration. “We are including a handbook to educate and inform the public about the feral hog population in Arkansas as well as assessing the impact of the hogs.” ....

Feral swine, an invasive species, have been a problem for years if not decades, and populations have been reported in at least 35 states with a total population “estimated at over 6 million,” as noted by USDA. At least one swine herd was reported in New Jersey while I was serving as the State Veterinarian, at the New Jersey Department of Agriculture, where we teamed up with the state Department of Environmental Protection and USDA Wildlife Services to eradicate the feral swine wreaking havoc and destroying property in South Jersey. ....

When it comes to “wild pig wars,” John Tomeček, Ph.D, has been leading the charge in Texas. Now he’s been tapped to take his leadership skills to the national level as the chair-elect of the National Wild Pig Task Force.

“John has leveraged state and cooperative funding to develop better educational programs, refine methods for collecting damage data and demonstrate successful methods to Texans. It was natural for him to lead the national task force.”
AgriLife Extension and its predecessor agencies have been leaders in wild pig management for many years, Tomeček said, starting with the work of longtime AgriLife Extension wildlife and fisheries specialist Billy Higginbotham.
Bodenchuk, who nominated Tomeček, said when Higginbotham retired, Tomeček stepped into two roles. One was a professional role at wild pig management conferences, providing good science; the other was on the wild pig scene, leading efforts on research and public outreach. ....
