Melody Belle returns victorious after the Gr.1 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Champion mare Melody Belle (NZ) (Commands) created a piece of New Zealand racing history at Ellerslie on Saturday when she strode to victory in the Gr.1 Bonecrusher NZ Stakes (2000m, or 1 1/4 miles), her fourteenth win at the elite level, to surpass the mighty Sunline (NZ) (Desert Sun) for the most Group One wins in the modern era for a New Zealand-trained galloper.
The 6-year-old daughter of Commands had attracted her share of doubters as to whether she could produce another Group One victory after being beaten at Te Rapa over the same distance in the Gr.1 Herbie Dyke Stakes last month.

Melody Belle, New Zealand’s darling of the turf, will continue her farewell tour in Sydney later this month.
Fresh off her history-making win in the Group One Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie on Saturday, the Jamie Richards-trained mare will fly to Sydney next week in preparation for the G1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill.
“She is booked to fly on March 25 and she will be able to work that morning and go straight into the Tancred,” Fortuna Syndication’s John Galvin said.

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr combination will head into Saturday's Group 1 Kennedy Australian Guineas (1600m) with a two-pronged attack, with Cambourne and Ironedge set to take their place in the $1 million feature.
Mark Zahra has been booked to ride Cambourne after his first-up seventh in the C.S. Hayes Stakes, with the stable expecting sharp improvement out to 1600 metres.
"He has bounced through his run and we are extremely happy with him," Kent Jnr explained.
"I thought it was a hidden run, he ended up in an awkward spot and is a big, free-flowing horse and they ran quick time in that race.

Brad Widdup says everything is on track for the return of progressive mare Icebath, who tackles the Triscay Stakes at Randwick.
Icebath, who was just pipped in a thriller by Collette in the $7.5 million Golden Eagle at her final spring outing, will kick off her autumn campaign in the Group Three mares event over 1200 metres on Saturday.
Widdup said everything had been “pretty straightforward” with the mare’s preparation, including two recent trials, and he was expecting her to give a good account first up.
