COVID-19: Business owners share how they'll respond to Texas' face mask mandate lift

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Many people are trying to decide what they'll do next Wednesday when the state's mask mandate gets lifted.
Some leaders and health professionals across the city said it's still too soon, and one bar owner said lifting the order puts an unfair pressure on local businesses.
National businesses have already taken a stance in Texas, saying they will continue their corporate policy of requiring a mask for employees and customers.
The owner of Marquis II, a longtime staple in West University, said he's frustrated because making a decision one way or the other could have big implications.

COVID-19 vaccine: Small clinics and churches work to increase access in vulnerable communities

13 Investigates found "vaccine desert" neighborhoods have more minorities, less access to the internet, less insurance coverage and make less money.
Meanwhile, in north Harris County, Fallbrook Church is tackling the vaccine deficit in the African American community head on.
"If we were a vaccination site on campus, I say this with all humility, I know our area can easily do 100,000 people," said Sr. Pastor Michael Pender.
Even though the church hosted COVID-19 testing and was even a drive-thru voting location, state officials are only distributing vaccines to medical facilities. So, the church did the next best thing: it partnered with a major hospital.

Coronavirus Texas: Businesses reserve the right to keep or drop COVID-19 measures

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Following Gov. Greg Abbott's decision to lift all COVID-19 restrictions, local businesses and restaurants are deciding whether they will drop or keep COVID-19 measures in place.
According to Abbott's executive order announced on Tuesday, starting Wednesday, March 10, all businesses located in counties that do not have high COVID-19 hospitalization numbers will be allowed to open at 100% capacity and will not be bound by COVID-19 restrictions and measures.
In the executive order, it states it's highly encouraged for people to wear a mask or face covering, but "no jurisdiction may impose a penalty of any kind for failure to wear a face covering."

Clear Creek ISD to provide staff with one-time COVID-19 payments despite trustee objections

LEAGUE CITY, Texas -- All Clear Creek ISD employees, except for the superintendent and the superintendent's cabinet members, will be receiving one-time payments of up to $500 to recognize the extra risks and efforts associated with doing their jobs during the pandemic.
The board of trustees voted to approve the payments at its Feb. 22 meeting, though trustees Michelle Davis and Scott Bowen opposed the measure due to its timing amid budgetary uncertainty. The district will spend $2.8 million to provide its 5,480 employees, approximately 2,800 of whom are teachers, with payments of either $250 or $500, according to district leaders and board meeting documents.
Staffers working more than half-time received $500 payments on Feb. 26, and those working less than half-time will receive $250 payments on April 16.

Gov. Gavin Newsom reacts to Texas lifting mask mandate, all other COVID-19 restrictions: 'Absolutely reckless'

SAN FRANCISCO -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom reacted Tuesday to the news that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is lifting all mask mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions in the state.

Gov. Greg Abbott weighing end to mask order, other statewide coronavirus rules, says announcement coming 'pretty soon'

Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday that Texas is looking at when it will be able to lift all statewide orders related to the coronavirus pandemic and that an announcement is forthcoming.
Abbott made the comments at a Corpus Christi news conference where he was asked when the statewide mask mandate would end as Texans continue to get vaccinated. That requirement has been in effect since July.
Abbott called it a "great question."
"We're working right now on evaluating when we're gonna be able to remove all statewide orders, and we will be making announcements about that pretty soon," Abbott said, without giving a specific time frame.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- There is some hope for Houstonians after a week of devastation capping off a crippling year for most.
"It's been trauma after trauma and people deserve some good news, some hope," said Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.
That hope is 11 lanes of cones marking out a massive drive-through vaccination operation. Under massive tents, 6,000 people a day will be vaccinated, seven days a week. On Tuesday, 100 people were vaccinated as part of the operations soft launch.
In a joint operation between Harris County, Houston and FEMA the mega vaccine site at NRG Park will fully vaccinate 126,000 people over the next six weeks.
