Coryell County, Sheriff's Office ask judge to dismiss Cove man's excessive force lawsuit | Crime

Attorneys for Coryell County and its sheriffâs department are asking a federal judge to dismiss an excessive force lawsuit that was filed by a Copperas Cove man last month.
Samuel Ramirez is demanding monetary damages after he says he was the victim of excessive force during an encounter between himself and unnamed deputies of the sheriffâs department in 2019, according to a federal civil rights lawsuit that was filed on April 26 in U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas in Austin.
No hearings have been set in the case.
Allegations
In his 10-page complaint, Ramirez alleges that a deputy assaulted him on April 30, 2019, when he was at his home in Cove.

BELTON, TX â A Central Texas nonprofit that specializes in mentoring and advocating for abused and neglected children going through the court and foster care system is in need of more male volunteers.
âOur volunteers and our supervisors are advocates for these children. Theyâre a voice for these children in the courts while their cases are going one,â explained Executive Director Kevin Kyle.
Volunteers donât just advocate for the kids. They also act as mentors.

CORYELL COUNTY, TX â Coryell County voters must decide whether to approve a $30.9 million bond for the construction of a new jail.
âWhen you get a division on the court and thereâs not a consensus, then itâs always the responsible thing to do to get voter input,â said Coryell County Judge Roger Miller.
Judge Miller says the current jail is overcrowded. The proposed new facility would have around 250 beds. Some say thatâs more than what the county needs.
âThey need to come up with a lot more logic to me and a lot of us. Why do we need a 250-bed facility when everyone around already has one? And theyâre making money. How are we gonna fill ours up?â said Mike Riddle, a Coryell County resident.

President Joe Biden on Saturday approved a major disaster declaration in Texas, a step that allows people and businesses affected by the devastating winter storm to seek federal assistance.
Gov. Greg Abbott requested on Thursday the major disaster declaration for all counties in Texas, according to a statement from his office. The Biden administration approved individual assistance in 77 counties and public assistance for emergency protective measures in all 254 counties.

CORYELL COUNTY, TX â During his State of the State address, Governor Greg Abbott announced he is making the expansion of broadband access an emergency item this legislative session.
"From medicine to education to business, broadband access is not a luxuryâit is an essential tool that must be available for all Texans," he said.
Itâs a service many in rural areas, like Coryell County, say they desperately need.
