Typhoid fever downs 30 in NoCot village

Google map of Pikit, North Cotabato COTABATO CITY - Health officials in North Cotabato province have sent a team to help the municipal health office of Pikit town to contain the rising number of typhoid fever cases in one of its remote villages. As of Tuesday, the North Cotabato Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) said at least 30 persons have been hospitalized for typhoid fever that hit the village of Manaulanan. In a statement, Dr. Eva Rabaya, North Cotabato provincial health officer, said the 30 patients were all residents of the village that have taken unsafe drinking water since the last week of December. Manaulanan is a remote village with no potable drinking water. Residents rely on commercially available mineral drinking water in gallons or bottles but the indigents take drinking water from water pumps and open wells. "No one was reported to have died among the patients," Rabaya said in a radio interview Tuesday. Quoting a report from the Pikit municipal health office, she said the possible cause of the typhoid fever was the contaminated drinking water that people sourced from open wells and water pumps in the area. "Many of the patients were children who are now in various hospitals in Pikit," Rabaya said, adding that members of the IPHO sent to the village have brought with them medicine and water purification tablets to help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases. M'lang town logs highest 1st-day vax recipients in NoCot

MEETING THE GOAL. Members of the M'lang health office prepare for the start of the three-day national vaccination drive from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, 2021 in M'lang, North Cotabato on Monday (November 29). The town has managed to immunize 5,366 residents on the first day, the highest number of vaccinees immunized in one day in North Cotabato province. (Photo courtesy of M'lang LGU) M'LANG, North Cotabato - Among all areas in the province, this town registered the highest number of vaccinees during the first day of the three-day nationwide Bayanihan, Bakunahan drive here on Monday. Dr. Glecerio Sotea, the municipal health officer and concurrent chair of the local Inter-Agency Task Force on coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), said they inoculated 5,366 residents on Monday, nearly hitting the 7,000 daily target inoculation set by the Department of Health. Records obtained from the Cotabato Integrated Provincial Health Office showed that Midsayap town followed with 5,260 vaccine recipients, Pigcawayan - 3,869; Makilala - 3,480; and Matalam with 3,216. "It's a corroborative effort of the local government with partner private entities who shared some of their resources for this endeavor," Sotea said. He said three vaccination hubs were set up at the covered court and multi-purpose hall of the M'lang Pilot Elementary School, and also at the M'lang National High School. Close to 300 volunteers facilitated the vaccination drive that included health professionals, information technology experts, and other professionals. "We involved all agencies from planning, information dissemination, logistics through the activation of a local vaccination operation center," he said, saying they implemented the best practices and key strategies to get a high vaccination turn-out. The town government and several private entities provided logistical support and food for vaccinees from far-flung villages. Each village was scheduled on an hourly basis to avoid the large crowds and to maintain the minimum health protocols. In total, M'lang has so far fully vaccinated 6,324 residents, while 31,072 have received their first doses, including the 5,473 pediatric vaccinees aged 12 to 17. Sotea said he remains optimistic that the town could achieve 70 to 75 percent population protection before the year ends. Currently, this town has four active mild Covid-19 cases who are staying at the municipal isolation facility in Barangay Sangat. (PNA) }
