A major American newspaper has faced criticism for retroactively editing an op-ed it published because the author used the word "male" to describe boys who identify as female, which the publication deemed offensive.
The op-ed piece, published by USA Today, was written by Chelsea Mitchell, a track athlete from Connecticut who is among the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the state's athletic association over its policy of allowing boys who identify as the opposite sex to compete in girls' sports.
In the op-ed, Mitchell wrote about the inherent unfairness in allowing boys to compete against girls because of the physical differences between males and females, such as strength and stamina, and the losses and missed opportunities that she and her fellow female runners experienced because they were required to compete against boys.

Female High School Track Star Says Competing Against Trans Athletes Is 'Devastating'

For former Connecticut track star Chelsea Mitchell, competing against transgender athletes — biological males — was “devastating.”
Mitchell opened up about her past experience in an editorial published Sunday in USA Today. She explained why she and three other athletes filed a lawsuit last year against the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference over the state’s decision to allow transgender athletes to compete on the teams that correlate with their determined sex and gender identity.
She expressed how crushing it was to lose “four women’s state championship titles, two all-New England awards, and numerous other spots on the podium to male runners.”

Connecticut lawsuit regarding rights of transgender high school athletes dismissed

U.S. District Court Judge Robert Chatigny dismissed a case that attempted to prevent transgender athletes from competing in girls high school sports in Connecticut on April 25.
The case was made in order to stop transgender athletes from competing in girls high school sports due to the concern that transgender females possessed unfair biolocal advantages compared to their non-transgender peers, having been born biologically male.

Sometimes I think you have to walk in the other person’s shoes. It was a very delicate situation, and there’s a case to be made for both sides. But I just wish people would be truthful about the issue because there are a lot of things that transgender athletes in high school are not able to do.”

Biased Judge Hides Behind "Moot" in Tossing Schoolgirls' Lawsuit Against Trans Athletes

Can a judge who orders plaintiffs’ counsel to call biological boys “females”—even though the very nature of the Title IX lawsuit involves questions of males’ competitive advantage in scholastic sports—render an impartial ruling on defendants’ motion to dismiss the suit?

It would seem the answer is “no.”
