It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way.
For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus (audiences can also rent it, at a price of $19.99, for a limited time via PVOD platforms). Disney tested a similar approach with “Mulan” late last summer, and now unveils its latest animated princess movie, “Raya and the Last Dragon” — though that label disguises the many ways in which this one advances the formula — both in theaters and via Disney Plus (where it can be rented for a premium surcharge).

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference on Monday, Walt Disney Company chief exec Bob Chapek said he’s “not sure there’s going back” to pre-pandemic theatrical windows.
Reiterating the company’s commitment to theatrical releases, Chapek reminded viewers that Disney in 2019 released 11 films that earned at least $1 billion, which “will continue to be a big deal” to the company. But he acknowledged the uncertainty that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic brings, given how few screens are currently open and moviegoers’ willingness to return to theaters. Those possible changes to consumer behavior are “more profound” to him.

You wouldn’t be able to guess it while watching the visually complex and highly detailed “WandaVision,” but the Marvel Studios series on Disney Plus was cinematographer Jess Hall’s first time working on a television series. The cinematographer credits his experience with shooting Cannes Gold Lion and Silver D&AD award-winning commercials and his long-form work on films such as “The Spectacular Now” and “Hot Fuzz” as making him versatile enough to incorporate multiple cinematic styles throughout the show.

The Walt Disney Co. streaming service Disney Plus on Wednesday expressed support for civil rights organizations advocating for Asian Americans amid a wave of violence against people in the AAPI community.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Disney shouted out the organizations Asian Americans Advancing Justice and Stop AAPI Hate. “The celebration of the Lunar New Year has been marred by the continued wave of violence against Asian-American Pacific Islanders across the United States,” the statement read. “We have spent the last week learning and listening to our friends, colleagues, and partners who are most affected. We stand with our AAPI family and want to amplify the voices of organizations that fight for civil rights and stand against hate: Asian Americans Advocating Justice – AAJC and Stop AAPI Hate.”

Coronavirus took a chunk out of the Walt Disney Company’s profits during its most recent quarterly results, but the popularity of Disney Plus helped cushion the blow of the pandemic. It also enabled the company to easily exceed Wall Street’s diminished expectations, an achievement that bolstered Disney’s shares.
The family entertainment giant reported adjusted earnings per share of 32 cents for the period ending on January 2, down from $1.53 from the year-ago period. That’s a significant decline, but not the losses that the investment community had expected to see. Revenues at the conglomerate dropped 22% from $20.9 billion to $16.2 billion. Disney also recorded $17 million in profits, an unexpected surprise though one that fell short of the $2.1 billion windfall that Disney reported in the year-ago period.

Disney Television Studios has formed a new division solely dedicated to acquiring and packaging intellectual property for development for ABC Signature and 20th Television.
The creative acquisitions department, as it will be known, is set to be led by Elizabeth Newman and Jordan Moblo, and will focus on identifying and securing rights to forthcoming and current bestselling books, podcasts, news stories and other properties. The execs will connect creators and rights holders with both studios’ bench of showrunners, writers, directors and talent to develop series for Disney’s ABC, Hulu, Freeform, FX, Disney Plus, NatGeo and other platforms.

Over the years, fans of singer and actor Brandy have learned to “never say never” or believe that something’s “impossible” — and their patience and perseverance has been rewarded. “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella,” the 1997 TV movie that stars Brandy and Whitney Houston, is officially coming to Disney Plus.
Disney announced Thursday that the beloved musical movie will launch on the streaming service “at the stroke of midnight” on Feb. 12.

The movie’s streaming debut has been long-awaited by fans, and Brandy herself, who urged the streamer to pick up the rights to the project last summer, while promoting her latest album, B7. “Disney can come on up and scoop up Cinderella. That would be awesome,” she said. Well, consider your wish granted.

The news was first reported by unofficial fan sites including What’s On Disney Plus. Contacted by
Variety, Disney offered no comment. The company is, however, expected to announce details of its plans for Disney Plus in neighboring Singapore at a virtual event on Feb. 2.

Within the Asia-Pacific region, the service is currently only available in Australia, New Zealand, India and Indonesia.
Unlike Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan, Malaysia was not on the list of 2021 launch territories announced by Disney in December at the company’s investor day presentation. But given recent insight into Disney Plus’ roaring start in neighboring Indonesia, Disney might be keen to accelerate the launch schedule.
