Third wave of COVID-19 'wreaking havoc' on Toronto, top doctor says

TORONTO --
Toronto could see about 2,500 COVID-19 cases per day by the end of April if the current rate of transmission remains the same, the city’s top doctor said Monday.
In a presentation to Toronto’s Board of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa said that the third wave of the pandemic is “wreaking havoc” on the city.
“All together this says that right now, what we can anticipate of this third wave, is likely going to be worse than we have seen thus far over the course of the pandemic,” the medical officer of health said.
“As I've mentioned already now a couple of times, this is due to increased transmission, and increased severity associated with that B.1.1.7. variant of concern, which is now the dominant strain.”

Mobile mechanics thriving during COVID-19 pandemic doing driveway repairs

TORONTO --
Many people have not been driving their vehicles as much during the COVID-19 pandemic, but they still require maintenance to keep them running smoothly.
Some drivers who want to avoid waiting rooms at dealerships and repair shops now have a new option for some services - mobile mechanics.
“Driving to body shops during this time of COVID is not really something we want to be doing," said Jeff Bernstein of Toronto who decided to use a mobile service to change the oil in his van and swap his winter tires for summer ones.
Bernstein has used https://estimates.getweel.com/ before the pandemic, but now he said it just makes that much more sense to have the services of mobile mechanics who can install a windshield or check your brakes without you having to leave home.

Ontario health minister denies politics played role in selection of COVID-19 hot spots

TORONTO --
Ontario's health minister pushed back in Question Period on Monday amid suggestions that politics may have played a role in the selection of which areas of the province are prioritized for COVID-19 vaccine access.
Liberal MPP John Fraser pointed to several areas based on the first three letters of a postal code deemed "hot spots" — but data showed were low on the list of COVID-19 case rates and hospitalization rates.
"For example, a postal code region in Kanata, a riding of a government minister, is deemed a hot spot despite lower rates of hospitalization and death than some 300 other neighbourhoods in Ontario," Fraser said.

Toronto mayor hopes hot spot residents aged 18+ will soon be able to use provincial booking system

Last Updated Tuesday, April 13, 2021 12:40AM EDT
The head of Toronto’s COVID-19 emergency response said Monday that younger residents living in hot spot neighbourhoods will not be getting an invite to attend mass immunization sites for now.
“The eligibility that the province extended to those between 18 and 49 years old was and is limited to taking part in mobile and pop-up clinics that are launched specifically in high-risk neighborhoods,” Chief Mathew Pegg said. “The province did not make the vaccine available by other means including through city-operated vaccine clinics to that age category yet.”
Speaking at a news conference, Pegg conceded that there has been some confusion around how the younger age group in hot spot areas can access vaccines.

Warrant issued for second suspect in Etobicoke drive-by killing

Last Updated Tuesday, April 13, 2021 12:21AM EDT
Toronto police have issued a second Canada-wide warrant in connection with the drive-by killing of a 21-year-old man in Etobicoke earlier this month.
The shooting took place on April 3 at around 5:40 p.m. in the area of Dixon and Scarlett roads.
According to police, two men were in a vehicle that was northbound on Scarlett Road when another vehicle drove up beside them and the occupants began shooting.
The victims’ vehicle was struck by multiple bullets, police said.
The suspects then crashed their vehicle into another vehicle at the corner of the intersection before fleeing the scene on foot. The victims drove to another location and called 911.

At least 80 per cent of Canadians say they want a coronavirus vaccine: online poll

Published Tuesday, April 13, 2021 5:43AM EDT
OTTAWA -- More Canadians than ever say they intend to get vaccinated against COVID-19, a new poll suggests while fear about vaccine safety is the main driver of hesitancy to get an injection.
All this comes as confidence in governments is plummeting in provinces being hit hardest by the third wave of the pandemic.
At least eight in 10 people surveyed last weekend by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies said they absolutely intend to roll up their sleeve for a vaccine.
The number has been steadily rising for months as vaccines have been rolling out in Canada and around the world, starting at 63 per cent in mid-October, rising to 70 per cent in early February, and 73 per cent in early March.
