The Modi Cult Is Far From Finished

The Modi Cult Is Far From Finished
While the prime minister's popularity has undoubtedly plummeted due to the government's mismanagement of the second COVID-19 wave, it does precious little to challenge his entrenched and flush-funded electoral machine.

Narendra Modi is surely passing through his worst patch ever as prime minister, but then, there is no reason to view this seven years’ ‘itch’ of the people as the beginning of his end. The sudden fury against his regime’s disastrous handling of COVID-19 was sparked off in the national capital and other urban pockets of power by shocking visuals of endless funeral pyres and by horror stories of ‘people we know’ gasping to death for want of oxygen. What was so utterly preposterous was that COVID-19 did not give any consideration to status, connections and other visible capabilities of the urban elite to beat all raps.

Thousands of patients have received inflated bills across the country. Our personal tragedy underscores the need to rethink India’s privately owned healthcare industry and restrain rampant profiteering.

Modi govt's 'schizophrenia' caused COVID-19 ravages, says Amartya Sen
The government seemed much keener on ensuring credit for what it was doing rather than ensuring that pandemics do not spread in India. The result was a certain amount of schizophrenia, Sen said

India's "confused" government focused on taking credit for its actions, rather than working to restrict the spread of COVID-19, resulting in schizophrenia that led to massive troubles, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has said. India was better placed to fight the pandemic because of its pharma manufacturing prowess and also higher immunity levels, the noted economist said while speaking at an event organised by the Rashtra Seva Dal late Friday evening.

What We Did When Our Government Collapsed: My Father Saeed Naqvi's COVID Story

What We Did When Our Government Collapsed: My Father Saeed Naqvi’s COVID Story
We have all experienced desperate times. You know what must be done. This moment was utterly different. Because we knew what had to be done. We just could not seem to do it.

Daughter of veteran journalist Saeed Naqvi shares a first person account of their struggle against COVID-19 in the week that the pandemic hit its peak in Delhi.
As a child I remember being told my father was somewhere in a far-away land, reporting a story on the Al Fatah guerrillas. I was wonderstruck. I imagined him in the wild, with giant silverback gorillas, and thought he was so brave. But silverbacks were protective said a dog-eared national geographic at our local lending library. I think I slept easy. It took years before adulthood brought me to words like Palestine, and taught me the difference between guerrillas and gorillas. I remember feeling more sad than silly at the loss of my wonderment. It had been a lovely image.

Breaking news: ‘PM Modi chokes during virtual meet with doctors, frontline workers of Varanasi’, May 21, 2021
It was the tears that Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually shed while addressing the medical and frontline personnel of his parliamentary constituency on May 21 that made news, not the fact that nowhere in that speech was there the slightest acknowledgment of the failures of his government, or a smidgeon of regret that so much devastation has happened under his watch.
