Class-action suit alleges sexual assault at University of New Brunswick health clinic

FREDERICTON --
Lawyers have filed notice seeking a class-action lawsuit against the University of New Brunswick and a physician over alleged sexual assaults committed at the university's student health centre.
The notice filed Monday claims the representative plaintiff -- who is a female student at the university -- was subjected to sexual assault by Dr. Manoj Bhargava during appointments for psychiatric treatment.
"The plaintiff alleges the defendant physician requested she wear loose clothing, or remove articles of clothing and underwear, so that her heart rate and blood pressure could be obtained," according to the statement of claim.
"The plaintiff alleges that the defendant physician obtained her heart rate and blood pressure often times by non-consensual sexual contact."

'Extremely moving' sculpture honouring N.S. mass shooting victims unveiled in Truro

TRURO, N.S. --
Wayne Smith has been creating sculptures for years, but his latest one is close to his heart.
The Broken Heart Sculpture was finished last June, but only unveiled over the weekend at Victoria Park in Truro.
The sculpture stands three-and-a-half metres tall and weighs 680 kilograms. The names of those lost in the tragedy, including that of an unborn child, are displayed on the piece.
"One of the hardest things, difficult things emotionally to do was the day before we brought it down was on a Friday was to put the names of all the people including my stepson Corrie," said Smith. "The emotions were very heavy that day."

Mother of murder victim worries about resurgence of gun violence after weekend shootings in Halifax area

HALIFAX --
Two shooting incidents in the Halifax area on the weekend have people talking about the amount of gun violence in the city.
There was no shortage of police near Mulgrave Park on Sunday night after reports of gunfire and a dark-coloured sedan speeding-away from the scene.
When a 25-year-old man turned-up in hospital with a gunshot wound 20 minutes later, the matter became even more serious.
"I just heard three shots, and then I heard two cars going out behind each other, like kind of taking off fast out of the parking lot here," said area resident Lynn Ozon.

Full-time delay for N.B. high school students should be permanent: NBTA

SAINT JOHN, N.B. --
A delay in returning New Brunswick high school students to full-time in-person learning should lead to the plan being scrapped altogether, according to the New Brunswick Teachers' Association.
The full-time return was supposed to happen Monday, replacing the one-day-on, one-day-off system that students had been under. The plan was postponed on Saturday with rising numbers of COVID-19 variants in the province.
The provincial government said it would revisit the decision during the week of April 26, adding its conclusion would be based on advice from Public Health.
"Changing the system again in May is just going to be a huge strain on everyone in the system when you have the end of the year right on the horizon," NBTA president Rick Cuming said on Monday.

Cyber crime becoming more prevalent during pandemic, experts warn

MONCTON, N.B. --
With more people working from home throughout the pandemic, cyber crime is on the rise.
Cyber criminals are constantly finding more advanced ways to attack Canada's most vulnerable, says the CEO of a company offering to help train people in order to prevent some of those cyber attacks.
"Business has never been better for criminals," said David Shipley, the CEO of Beauceron Security.
Shipley is a cybersecurity expert who says small- to mid-sized businesses have been cyber criminals’ main target during the pandemic because they are the most vulnerable.
"Those that are still open, governments, hospitals, higher education, K-12 schools, have been bearing the brunt of that activity, as criminals continue to try and make the money they made before the pandemic," Shipley says.
