Toyota Wellspring Fund, CREATE Foundation announce $89,500 in early childhood grants


The Toyota Wellspring Education Fund (TWEF) and the CREATE Foundation announced $89,500 in early childhood grant funding to be distributed to local school districts by the end of May.
The funds are intended to increase the percentage of kindergarten-ready students, but each school district will have the autonomy to design their own programs to achieve that goal.
The TWEF committee has committed $89,500 in annual grant funding for the next three years. Those funds can be requested by the eight school districts in Pontotoc, Union and Lee counties — Pontotoc City, Pontotoc County, New Albany, Union County, Baldwyn, Nettleton, Lee County and Tupelo. ....

Lisa Hawkins receives Red Rasberry Award for volunteer and business leadership

Lisa Hawkins, standing in front of the campaign wall at Regional Rehab in Tupelo, is the recipient of the organization s prestigious Red Raspberry Humanitarian Award for 2021. Hawkins, who owns Room to Room in Tupelo and serves on various nonprofit boards throughout the area, said she hopes her life and volunteerism can serve as encouragement to others.

“Our country is in the throes of a most painful and unpredictable transition,” contended Maria Kefalas and the late Patrick Carr in Hollowing Out the Middle: The Rural Brain Drain and What It Means for America. “Too many young people in their twenties and thirties are leaving.”
Lewis Whitfield, Senior Vice President of the Create Foundation in Tupelo, pointed me to this book written in 2001. The problem described has continued to grow across America and particularly in Mississippi, which was one of only three states to lose population in the latest Census.
The 17 counties served by the Create Foundation in northeast Mississippi make up one of the strongest economic regions in the state. Yet, “12 of our 17 counties are losing population,” said Whitfield. Nonetheless, the foundation’s 17-county region gained population overall. ....
