AHMEDABAD: Gujarat on Tuesday reported the highest number of 14,352 coronavirus positive cases in a day and a record 170 deaths, including 27 in Surat, the state health department said.
With the addition of new cases, the count of infections in the state has gone up to 5,24,725 while the death toll reached 6,656, it said.
Gujarat is now left with 1,27,606 active cases.
A total of 7,803 patients were discharged during the day, raising the number of recoveries in Gujarat to 3,90,229, the department said in a release.
With new detections, Gujarat's case recovery rate fell to 74.37 per cent.

With the surge in COVID-19 cases in the city the District Administration has decided to take necessary precautionary steps towards the containment of the virus. Sandeep Kumar Singh, IAS, District Magistrate, Dadra & Nagar Haveli has issued an order imposing section 144 in Daman. Only essential and medical shops are allowed to remain open. The curfew timings has been extended from 6:00 pm. to 6:00 am., however the operation of medical services, delivery of food items, industrial workers commuting for shift duties are exempted. This order shall remain in force till 30 April, 2021.

Torrent Power sizzles on emerging highest bidder for Dadra Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu discom


Torrent Power jumped 5.08% to Rs 383.35 after the company emerged as the highest bidder for acquisition of 51% stake in the power distribution company in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.The acquisition is subject to further formalities as prescribed under the tender documents. The bidding for the distribution business of the Union Territory has been undertaken as part of the Government of India's initiative to privatize distribution utilities of Union Territories to usher in efficiency, which will provide a model for emulation by other utilities across the country.
Torrent Power said it currently distributes nearly 16.66 billion units to over 3.65 million customers in the cities of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Dahej SEZ and Dholera SIR in Gujarat; Bhiwandi, Shil, Mumbra and Kalwa in Maharashtra and Agra in Uttar Pradesh.

An Indian human rights group that monitors atrocities against Christians has expressed opposition to a directive by Daman's administration requiring the mandatory veneration of the Hindu goddess of knowledge.
The New Delhi-based United Christian Forum (UFC) has also urged the administration and the Directorate of Education of Daman to immediately withdraw the circular.

India's total COVID-19 active cases currently stand at1.39 lakh with 33 states and union territories having reported less than 5,000 active cases in a span of 24 hours, the Health Ministry said on Monday.
Three states -- Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka -- cumulatively account for77 per cent (76.5 per cent) of India's total active cases. Kerala, Maharashtra together account for 74.72 per cent of the total active cases.
Tripura and Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli currently have only two active cases each.
The ministry said that 18 states and UTs have not reported any deaths in a span of 24 hours. These are Assam, Rajasthan, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Nagaland, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

In a survey, one challenge that the UAE frontline heroes identified was their overall health and wellbeing during the pandemic.
Low-income frontline heroes in the UAE and their immediate families will get expanded medical insurance coverage. The initiative was launched as per directives issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
The initiative ensures that 10,000 eligible professionals enrolled in the Frontline Heroes Office registry will benefit from expanded coverage from February 1.

The Fern Hotels & Resorts will be opening 8 new hotels in the first half of 2021, Noshir A Marfatia, Senior Vice President - Sales & Marketing, The Fern Hotels & Resorts said.
This will take the tally to 82 hotels across 67 locations, the senior VP informed. Two new hotels are opening in January’21 in Junagadh (Gujarat) and Kevadia (Statue of Unity). The other new hotels will be opening in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. This will propel the key count to 4800 plus keys across all their hotels, he added. And this comes after successfully opening 2 Fern hotels in December itself, in Daman and Gangtok (Sikkim). We are also now in advanced stages to open two more hotels, one in Mumbai and another in Thane. That will take our presence in the city to 8 hotels.
