'Role models for the youth': 5 school buildings named after prominent Pasigueños in Pasig City – Manila Bulletin

In celebration of "Araw ng Pasig," five newly-constructed school buildings in the city were officially named after prominent Pasigueños, following a policy shift steering away from naming infrastructure projects after incumbent politicians.
The short ceremony was held at the Rizal High School at 11

Passing on the art today

Iam very proud of my ancestors — starting with Damian Domingo, the first recognized Filipino artist who established the Academia de Artes y Dibujos in Tondo, Manila in the 1800s. He accepted illustrados and indios without discrimination.

More information on earliest Philippine photographs

ON the subject of the earliest Philippine photographs of which I have written before and for which Prudencio Mateos Perez, a journalist and antique bookseller from Madrid, got in touch with me, there is new information. And that is thanks to the painstaking research of Sr. Mateos Perez, who is also the custodian and cataloguer of an extensive library of documents of the Spanish governor-general of the Philippines from 1844-1850, Narciso Claveria...

Manila Photo Ops, 1840s

With a starting bid of five million, the super rare
letras y figuras
Views of Manila must have sold for an eye-watering sum in last Saturday’s Leon Gallery auction. It was painted in the 1840s by
José Honorato Lozano (ca. 1815-1885), surely either as a souvenir or as a going away gift to an expat with a Manila trading firm, probably American.
Damian Domingo (1796-1834), one of our earliest artists known by name, pioneered in painting figures as
tipos del pais, i.e.,
sangleyes of various occupations and social standings in typical costumes.
Lozano did him one better by positioning figures such as to form letters that spell out a name or in the auctioned object, a phrase. The galleon trade had just ended and non-Spanish traders were permitted to open shop in the Philippines. They were into exports (e.g., sugar, abaca, coffee), imports (e.g., household goods, textiles, wines), shipping, insurance, etc. Lozano’s works were great mementos and, soon enough, the local gentry commissioned them, too.

Cariño also wrote that Lozano’s paintings not only “confirm the artist’s distinction as an incomparable visual chronicler of daily life… [but also] painted scenes from everyday life that tell a story”. As such, Lozano’s albums were reproduced mostly to serve as souvenirs for foreign travellers. They are revelations of the colours popular in his time, the opulent life of the
principalia and
ilustrado social classes, as well as the diverse ethnic traditions in the different islands and jungles of the Philippines. Art history professor Santiago Pilar was once quoted in an article saying that Lozano’s art represented “some of the most quaint and endlessly fascinating relics of Filipino culture in Spanish times”.

Art, champagne taste and a beer budget

There were also pieces of furniture—a fabulous
aparador for which you had to have a spare P2 million before you raise your hand. A Cordillera
hagabi, a rather ungainly prestige bench (the seat is slanted so you could slide down), fetched an incredible P22 million. Sculpture,
santos, drawings, historical documents, maps were also on offer and fetched similarly high prices.

At that rate, ordinary mortals particularly young people early on their career paths need to strategize to collect art. I suppose most want to live with things they like, to feel they got their money’s worth, and to expect an increase in the value of their stuff.
