She has no large foundation, headquarters or public website. That makes it easier to dispense money on her own terms — and for others to prey on the vulnerable in her name.
Danielle Churchill needed
help. She was raising five children in Wollongong, on the Australian coast south of Sydney, and had to cover thousands of dollars in special therapy fees for her 10-year-old son, Lachlan, who has autism. She tried crowdfunding on the site GoFundMe, but raised a tiny fraction of what she had hoped for.

Beware the swindler disguised as philanthropist MacKenzie Scott
May 05, 2021
Two years ago, MacKenzie Scott signed the Giving Pledge. She agreed to give away half of her $35 billion fortune. That announcement came about two months after her divorce from Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person.
Now, scammers are taking advantage of MacKenzie Scott's generosity by posing as Scott, or a fake foundation that bears her name.
This interview has been edited for clarity.
Nicholas Kulish: Last year, it's safe to say MacKenzie Scott became the most important philanthropist in America, in a way. She gave away nearly $6 billion, which in and of itself is just a huge amount of money, but it was also incredible how she did it.

MacKenzie Scott's Giving Spurs Elaborate Scams

Should the philanthropically inclined do more to protect the vulnerable?
MacKenzie Scott, the billionaire ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, set out to do good last year, announcing in a late December 2020 blog post that she had given away $4.2 billion over the span of a few months. Inspired by the many impromptu COVID-19 relief initiatives by others, Scott explained that she had expedited her own philanthropic efforts because of the crippling effect of COVID-19 and the resulting windfall for some who were already wealthy (Amazon, for example, saw a 67% jump in profits as consumers shopped online due to the pandemic).

MacKenzie Scott made a philanthropic splash in 2020 by giving away more than $5 billion of her vast wealth to a variety of organizations. In a new report this weekend, The New York Times details how scammers have followed in Scott’s footsteps, targeting the vulnerable with promises of more financial help.
Scott, the author and ex-wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, made gifts last year of $1.67 billion in July and more than $4 billion in December to hundreds of non-profits, universities, food banks and others, with no strings attached. One of the richest people on the planet, her move is part of the “Giving Pledge” to give away the majority of her wealth to charity.

What happens when you’re a high-profile billionaire who’s announced a plan to donate nearly all of your money? Over the course of 2020, MacKenzie Scott donated $6 billion to various nonprofit groups and other charitable causes. The speed and directness with which Scott has embarked on this effort has left many observers impressed, with the feeling that she might transform the philanthropic space.
That’s the good news. The bad news is that a group of scammers have decided to profit from Scott’s charitable efforts, impersonating her representatives and using a high-tech system to divest already needy people from their money.
