Stocks of defence-related companies have been firing on all cylinders on the bourses in calendar year 2023 (CY23). Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), Bharat Electronics (BEL), Bharat Dynamics (BDL), Data Patterns, MTAR Tech, Cochin Shipyard and GRSE have rallied in the range of 21-96 per cent so far this year. By comparison, the BSE Sensex is up 8 per cent. The gains have been sustained on the back of robust export opportunities, a healthy project pipeline and the government's continued push for local manufacturing and indigenisation of defence equipment.

Data Patterns share price: When asked about an update on BrahMos, the company management said, "BrahMos seeker is about to get flight tested anytime. We are not very sure exactly in the next few weeks. It is still in that stage. The BrahMos flight testing is over, we will be able to announce this. But it is the program is on, it is current and they are expecting to do a flight test very soon."

This remarkable surge underscores the resilience and growth potential of these companies, with Cera Sanitaryware, Data Patterns and Esab India taking the lead.

The 30-share BSE Sensex pack rose 170 points or 0.26 per cent to trade at 65,119, while the broader NSE Nifty moved 50 points or 0.26 per cent up to trade at 19,360. Mid- and small-cap shares were positive as Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.54 per cent and small-cap gained 0.52 per cent.
