Malaysia postpones two more by-elections amid pandemic as local emergency declared

PUTRAJAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysia's King on Wednesday (Dec 16) consented for an emergency to be declared in two constituencies in Perak and Sabah, to postpone by-elections in the two seats.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the Cabinet had presented their views to the King on the Gerik (Perak) and Bugaya (Sabah) by-elections which were slated to be held simultaneously on Jan 16.
This was the third postponement of a by-election, with Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah previously declaring a local emergency to delay polls for the Batu Sapi parliamentary seat in Sabah.
"The Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) has given his consent for an emergency to be declared for both by-elections," Tan Sri Muhyiddin said in a statement.

Budget 2021 passed successfully

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a nail-biting end which saw Budget 2021 finally passed in the Dewan Rakyat despite a last-ditch effort by the opposition to derail it through a bloc vote.
The RM322.5bil Budget, the largest in the nation’s history, was passed when 111 voted aye while 108 said nay with one absentee.
There was drama at the end of the committee stage when Pokok Sena MP Datuk Mahfuz Omar stood up to call for a bloc vote right after Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz stood up to move a motion to table the Budget for the third and final reading.Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun then ordered the House bell to be rung for two minutes. The House then waited for 10 minutes for all MPs to come in before the bell was rung again to indicate the commencement of voting.

King consents to Emergency in Gerik and Bugaya, by-elections postponed (Updated)

PUTRAJAYA: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong (
pic) has consented for an emergency to be declared in Gerik, Perak and Bugaya, Sabah, thus postponing the by-elections in the two seats.
In a statement, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Cabinet had presented their views to the King on the by-elections, which were both scheduled to be held simultaneously on Jan 16.
“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has given his consent for an emergency to be declared for both by-elections.
“On Dec 4, the Cabinet discussed in detail the consequences of holding the Gerik and Bugaya by-elections if the Covid-19 pandemic was still widespread in the country.

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) conforms with the declaration of Emergency Proclamation for the Gerik parliamentary constituency, Perak and the Bugaya state constituency in Sabah, in effect cancelling the by-elections for both seats, said its chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh.
The Declaration of Emergency Proclamation based on Clause (1) of Article 150 of the Federal Constitution allows an ordinance to be proclaimed under Clause (2B) of Article 150 to revoke the date set for the by-elections for Gerik parliamentary seat and Bugaya state seat, after it received consent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al -Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, he said.

IPOH, Dec 14 — Perak Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Saarani Mohamad today said 11 names were suggested so far to contest the Gerik parliamentary by-election, which is set to take place next month.
However, Saarani, who is also Perak mentri besar, did not disclose the names that were suggested.
“I have met the Gerik Umno division committee last Friday and they have agreed in terms of the formula to suggest the candidates.
