Eateries enjoying brisk business

Effects from the relaxation were immediately felt with more dine-ins and reservations.
However, there were now some concerns over the RM10,000 fine on those who violated the standard operating procedure.
The Pan Malaysia Koo Soo Restaurants & Chefs Association vice-president Datuk Ringo Kaw said eateries in the Klang Valley were seeing positive increase in patronage, especially during weekends.
“Although interstate travel is still not allowed, people are utilising the opportunity to gather with their loved ones.
“Many are also making plans to see their family before Ramadan begins next month. This is a good sign and we hope things will improve further, ” he said.

Mixed reactions to increased fine

PETALING JAYA: Although the increased fine of RM10,000 has been described as too harsh by some, the Malaysian Public Health Physicians Association says there is no other way to deter irresponsible behaviour.
Its president Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar said the increased fine will help to ensure that the SOP is fully adhered to.
“It will help curb the spread of Covid-19. It is important for us all to adhere to the SOP.
“If we need to go anywhere, we should make sure we follow the SOP. That’s how we prevent ourselves from being fined, ” he said.
Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, vice-president of the Malaysian Retailers Association, however said the government should reconsider the move.

We need urgent rent aid or loans, eateries plea

PETALING JAYA: Restaurants and small coffeeshops hope the government can provide them with six months’ rental subsidies or interest-free loans to keep them afloat.
Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) and Malaysia Singapore Coffeeshop Proprietors’ General Association (MSCPGA) said since their members have contributed to the government’s coffers in various forms of taxes, they hoped the government could reciprocate.
Presma president Datuk Jawahar Ali Taib Khan said “mamak restaurant” owners were now in dire straits as some rents have reached up to RM35,000 a month in the cities.
He said unless the government steps in immediately to provide rental subsidies, he foresees many more resorting to ah long (illegal loan sharks) to stay afloat.

MCO: NSC should review two-per-table rule for larger tables, says Lee Lam Thye

PETALING JAYA: The National Security Council (NSC) should consider reviewing the two-person-per-table ruling at eateries with large tables, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
"Tables at some restaurants vary in sizes and what can be done is adjusting the current ruling for larger tables.
"It is not practical for a large table to accommodate only two persons who are seated 2m apart," he said when contacted on Sunday (Feb 14).
Lee, who is the Alliance for Safe Community chairman, also described that the two-per-table ruling led to absurd situations involving families intending to dine out.
"For example, if there is a family of four, it would be absurd for their children to sit at separate tables if they are from the same household.

Restaurant owners take MCO in their stride

WITH the latest movement control order that prohibits dine-in at restaurants, some restaurateurs have learned lessons from the first MCO last March to maintain their businesses.
The government has announced that dine-in is not allowed in eateries in states where the MCO is enforced until Jan 26.
Even prior to the MCO, modern London-dining restaurant W1 owner Danny Thompson said they had pre-empted their flyers containing restaurant promotions and updated their food delivery partners.
“We were active during the initial MCO last year, so we knew what to do now, ” he told StarMetro in Kuala Lumpur.

IT is devastating to see that all efforts from every segment of society are in vain. Malaysia used to be a role model for other countries to learn how to combat the Covid-19 pandemic effectively, but now it has become the third most infectious country in the Southeast Asia region.

PETALING JAYA: With the easing of restrictions starting Dec 7, industry players are expecting a steady recovery to businesses as they anticipate more sales and the return of customers during the year-end festive season.
Interstate and inter-district travel restrictions and passenger limits imposed on vehicles have been rescinded since Monday as the government hopes to balance public health and economic stability.
Restrictions on tourism will be re-evaluated and social visits to Sabah are now allowed, provided visitors undergo a Covid-19 swab test three days before travelling.
