Despite wide publicity, people still falling prey to Macau scams

PETALING JAYA: Fear of enforcement action by government agencies, poor awareness and lack of proper information are among the reasons why some segments of society are still falling prey to fraudsters, particularly Macau scams, says an NGO leader.
In expressing his concerns, Kuala Lumpur Crime Prevention Practitioner Association chairman Bok Siew Mun said despite numerous reminders by the authorities, members of the public – even highly educated ones – continue to become victims.
“Lately, there has been quite a number of Macau scam cases involving substantial losses.
“More concerted efforts should be carried out to disseminate information to the people to make them aware of the existence of these scammers.

“Police have noticed the advertisement that went viral on social media regarding the sale of the Covid-19 vaccine online and the business operator has issued a statement to deny it.

The MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief shared that he received a screenshot of an online shopping platform listing the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine a few days ago.
"All these are scams to cheat the people of their money," he told a press conference on Friday (March 5).
Any such listing on the platform cannot be found at the moment and the veracity of the screenshot cannot be determined.

Scammers made off with RM62.3m last year from recently unemployed

KUALA LUMPUR: Scammers have put those who have lost their jobs due to Covid-19 into deeper trouble by offering them non-existent loans.
Under the guise of a white knight, the scammers made off with more than RM62.3 million from thousands of struggling Malaysians.
Federal police commercial crimes investigations department (CCID) director Commissioner Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob today said there were 5,718 cases reported throughout last year.
“The syndicates would look out for victims in the social media with advertisements offering low-interest and easily approved loans. This would draw their victims in and the scammers would instruct them to make upfront payments claiming it to be for legal fees, agreement fees, insurance and other charges. When the victims make the payment, the syndicate would cut-off communications with them,“ he said.
