People celebrating New Year's Eve in the Netherlands may face rather unpleasant weather when they ring in 2024. Dutch meteorological office KNMI predicted average sustained winds ranging from about 30 to 40 kilometers per hour with consistent precipitation on both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
Christmas Day 2023 will go down in the record books as the third warmest December 25 ever observed, Weeronline reported. In De Bilt, Utrecht, the temperature rose to 12.5 degrees Celsius on Monday. Boxing Day is also expected to be rather mild, but slightly cooler. The national weather record was set in 2015 when the thermometer peaked at 14.0 degrees. In 1997, it reached 12.8 degrees.
The temperature in De Bilt, Utrecht reached 11.3 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, tied for the sixth warmest Boxing Day on record. As a result, the two-day Christmas period was the second warmest since recordkeeping began in 1901. Five of the ten warmest Christmas periods were recorded since the turn of the century.
The temperature this year is expected to average 11.7 degrees Celsius, tying the record for the warmest year ever measured in the Netherlands. The average temperature was also just as warm in 2014 and 2020, reports weather website Weeronline. Normally in the country, the average is 10.6 degrees all year round.
Homeowners can expect to pay on average of 938 euros on municipal taxes and fees next year, an increase of 5.8 percent equaling about 51 euros, said homeowners lobbying association Vereniging Eigen House (VEH). A study of housing costs in 110 municipalities with complete tax and fee data for 2024 also showed wide disparities between municipalities.
