SEOUL – South Korea’s main opposition party is set to win in Wednesday’s mayoral elections in the nation’s two biggest cities, Seoul and Busan, by solid margins, according to the results of exit polls released by local broadcasters, likely dealing a blow to the ruling camp less than a year from the next presidential election.

The ruling Democratic Party’s Park Young-sun and main opposition People Power Party’s Oh Se-hoon engaged in their final TV debate Monday ahead of the April 7 by-elections, where they clashed over Oh’s alleged land speculation and the Moon administration’s housing policies. Park criticized Oh, saying, “If a lying candidate becomes a mayor, we have nothing to teach blossoming children.” Oh criticized the Moon administration, asking Park, “The former administration raised home appraisal price by 14%, but the Moon administration raised by 72%. Is it appropriate?”

By-elections to be held next month to find new mayors of Seoul and Busan

Seoul's ballot is yet to come, but candidates from each major party have been confirmed.
The ruling Democratic Party's Park Young-sun is looking to merge with Kim Jin-ai, the candidate from Open Democratic Party.
Unifying the candidacies of two rivals from the opposition bloc will be a key factor in how the election will unfold.
A former Seoul mayor himself, Oh Se-hun won the primary for the main opposition People Power Party and another major candidate is Ahn Chul-soo, a former Presidential Candidate of the People's Party.
Oh and Ahn met on Sunday night to discuss forming a single opposition candidacy and will later decide who will run before registration opens on March 18th.
