Column: San Ysidro gallery honors the everyday heroines in our lives
When the pandemic shut down most of California’s cultural life last March, the members of the Front Arte & Cultura center in San Ysidro had an eye-opening epiphany. While they were not essential workers, they were doing an essential thing. They just had to figure out how to keep doing it.
“People sometimes think that the arts don’t do anything important, but what we heard was, ‘We need music. We need workshops. We need to paint. We need activities for our kids,’” gallery director Francisco Morales said during a recent phone interview. “For us, working during the pandemic was a challenge, but it was also an exercise in creativity and communicating with with our community in different ways,”

Beyoncé has continued to offer her soothing presence during these trying times. After appearing on both the
Together at Home concert, she announced that her BeyGOOD initiative will donate $6 million to support mental health organizations during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement on her website, Bey announced that she's partnering with UCLA and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's #Startsmall to aid organizations that provide mental wellness services. "Beyoncé's BeyGOOD is supporting organizations that are on the ground 24/7, including United Medical Center, Bread of Life, Matthew 25 and others, to address these dire needs in some of the hardest hit areas, providing basic necessities, including food, water, cleaning supplies, medicines, face masks, and personal hygiene items. Void of these basic necessities, mental burdens are also accelerated," the statement read.
