Cisco has released a security advisory following a cyber threat to its IOS EX Software, which without action could leave customers vulnerable. At 4.50pm yesterday (17 October), Cisco released the following statement on the NHS England cyber page: "Cisco is aware of active exploitation of a previously unknown vulnerability in the web UI feature of Cisco IOS XE Software when exposed to the internet or to untrusted networks. "This vulnerability allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to create an account on an affected system with privilege level 15 access. "The attacker can then use that account to gain control of the affected system. For steps to close the attack vector for this vulnerability, see the Recommendations section of this advisory Cisco will provide updates on the status of this investigation and when a software patch is available." Generative AI unleashing massive disruption in health

How to harness, regulate and safely enable the use of generative AI in healthcare were central themes of this year's HLTH conference in Las Vegas this week. Jon Hoeksma reports for Digital Health News The annual US gathering of investors, VCs, and start-ups spans using digital technology to rethink delivery of all aspects of the vast US healthcare system, from supply chains, reimbursement, remote care, employee mental health, leadership, and equity. But time and again it was generative AI that was cited as the biggest technological disruptor. Dozens of AI start-ups from across the globe were present at the HLTH show, ranging from AI for medical search and knowledge tools, disease specific models like the UK's Skin Analytics, patient engagement tools, tools to extract meaning from unstructured medical notes like another UK start-up Pangeaea, and even an AI start-up dedicated to penis health. We may be approaching peak AI in health hype. AI and machine learning has been widely recognised

Privacy groups focus on national data opt-out as FDP tender concludes

As NHS England prepares to announce the winner of the £480 million contract to deliver the new Federated Data Platform (FDP), legal groups and data privacy activists are focusing on the national data opt-out and its future status. The FDP project has been mired in controversy due to questions about its cost, purpose, a lack of transparency over the tender process and special concerns about the incumbent provider and presumed leading bidder, US data analytics giant Palantir, in partnership with Accenture, which some worry has corporate values culture at odds with the values of the NHS. Yet legal and data privacy campaigners interviewed by Digital Health News say that there have long been concerns about NHSE's management of the opt-out, which was introduced in May 2018 and allows citizens to choose not to have their health data shared, which the FDP project has now brought to the boil. The argument is hardly a moot one, citizens have shown their willingness to vote with their feet on

AI and Data start-ups should see NHS organisations as partners

The most successful start-ups in the NHS will be those that see their relationship with the health service as a partnership, Professor Joe Harrison, national director of the NHS App has told Digital Health News ahead of his appearance at Digital Health AI and Data 2023. Harrison, who is also CEO of Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, will join Feebris CEO and co-founder Dr Elina Naydenova, Medwise.ai CEO and co-founder Dr Keith Tsui and other panellists for a session looking at the future of AI and healthcare start-ups on the AI and Analytics stage on Day One. AI and Data is running from 30-31 October at the Business Design Centre in London. "We know it's a hard industry to get into, and what organisations like Milton Keynes do is provide an environment that welcomes start-ups," Harrison said. "The challenge is getting that commercial balance between the startup getting NHS sponsor and what that might mean to the business long-term versus the actual costs to

Lenus digital tool halved time spent in hospital for lung disease patients

A study has found that admissions and hospital bed days were both reduced by 50% for high-risk COPD patients using a digital support service, reducing the burden on over-stretched healthcare services. Using a digital support service can reduce the time patients with high-risk chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) spend in hospital each year, according to NHS researchers. COPD, a long-term progressive lung disease that causes narrowing of the airways and difficulty breathing, affects more than 1.2 million people in the UK and almost 30,000 die from it each year. The disease is predicted to cost the NHS £2.5 billion each year by 2030, mainly because of the expense of emergency hospital admissions due to COPD exacerbations. The research was focused on how to support patients with self-management. Using AI and data to support patients The study published this week in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease found that hospital admissions and bed days
