Uncertainty looms over completion of BWDB works to protect embankments and dredge rivers ahead of monsoon
At least two dozen river dredging and embankment protection projects aimed at combating floods and erosion across the country are set to miss the deadline of this June due to fund crunch, red tape, and mistakes in assessments.
Completion of these projects is now uncertain particularly because the government opted for austerity measures against the backdrop of the Covid-19 economic downturn, a top official of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) confirmed.
The projects are crucial to reducing the damage of croplands and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, a common phenomenon during the monsoon when rivers of the country swell, said experts. ....

The government approved a proposal in principle to procure SARS COV 2 (COVID-19) vaccines from Sinopharm of China under Direct Procurement Method (DPM) in order to meet the growing demand of vaccines in the country.
The approval came from the 15th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs in this year held virtually today with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting virtually, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Dr Sahida Akhter said that the proposal was given approval considering protection of public health, reducing COVID-19 infection rate on emergency state purpose. ....

DHAKA, April 28, 2021 (BSS) – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today approved a proposal on producing Chinese and Russian vaccines – Sinopharm and Sputnik V- in the country for ensuring Covid-19 vaccine for all.
The approval came from the 14th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held virtually with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.
Briefing the reporters virtually after the meeting, Mustafa Kamal said that the approval for producing Chinese and Russian vaccines has been given and at the same time, the government will pursue procuring vaccines from the country’s primary source – Serum Institute. ....

DHAKA, April 21, 2021 (BSS) – The government will procure some 33.60 lakh MMBtu of LNG from Vitol Asia Pte Ltd, Singapore at a cost of around Taka 267.58 crore in a bid to meet the growing demand of LNG in the country.
The purchase proposal was approved at the 15th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) of this year held today virtually with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.
Briefing reporters virtually after the meeting, Cabinet Division additional secretary Dr Sahida Akhter said the meeting approved a total of eight proposals.
She informed that the import of per unit MMBtu LNG would cost the government $8.012. ....
