Education experts will debate the controversial place of phonics in the teaching of reading at this year’s Creating Futures Summit, hosted by Griffith University’s School of Education and Professional Studies (EPS) on Thursday 6 May.
The annual Griffith University summit was rescheduled following a COVID-19 lockdown across Greater Brisbane but looks to shine a spotlight on issues relating to the teaching profession and especially how this shapes initial teacher education.
This year’s virtual, immersive event will focus on Quality Teaching of Reading in the Early Years and has attracted more than 500 delegates from around Australia, and as far afield as New Zealand, Scotland, and Wyoming in the United States.

REED CITY — A former Osceola County Sheriff’s Office employee was sentenced to prison for possessing and collecting hundreds of images of child pornography.
“I know I have caused a great deal of pain to my family, friends and former coworkers,” 40-year-old Andrew Wernette told the court Wednesday. “I’ve made a lot of people’s lives really, really difficult.”

Jason Diaz resigned Monday night after learning about the charges against him, his lawyer said.
A Lowell, Michigan, police officer was arraigned Tuesday on assault, misconduct and weapons charges after he fired at a fleeing vehicle last year, wounding a passenger in the head, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said.
In a statement announcing the charges against Officer Jason Diaz in Lowell, Nessel adressed another police involved shooting, saying there was insufficient evidence to charge Shelby Township Police Officer Jason Zuk in the 2018 fatal shooting of a man with mental health issues in a separate case.

Bloody annoying behaviour from Vector yesterday. Caused the site to be off for most of the day and evening.
We'd been informed earlier in the month of a power shutdown from 8am to 10 am. That is on the limits of my UPS. I just organised to be home during the morning. The UPS ran until about 1013.
By which time, I was asking about why it was taking so long. The workers then told me that the power would be off until sometime around 4pm.
Unfortunately the system shutdown hard, because of problem in the UPS configuration. I had to repair the partition tables of the two drives that are the current TS system.
