Free backpacks available for SWAG residents

The start of the school year is edging closer and the Southwest Advocacy Group (SWAG) is having its annual backpack giveaway for residents in those neighborhoods.
"We just think this is one of the nicest things we can do for kids and get them excited about returning to school," said Dorothy Benson, chairwoman of SWAG.
The Backpack Giveaway is a collaboration between the nonprofit and the Partnership for Strong Families.
SWAG will give backpacks to families with K-12 students who live in the neighborhoods of Majestic Oaks, Holly Heights, Harbor Cove, Pine Meadows, Hidden Oaks Mobile Home Park, Gordon Manor, Tower Oaks and Linton Oaks.

COVID Florida: Mask debate divides Haile Village Farmers Market

The dilemma facing shoppers at most farmers markets centers on which vendor has the best-looking peppers or carrots, or maybe the best prices.
But another consideration has crept in at the Saturday morning Haile Village market: which vendors are wearing masks.
Several vendors — selling meat, vegetables, olive oil — do not. One cited his own health as a reason. Others declined to say.
Meanwhile, some vendors post signs asking customers to wear face coverings or tack the Alachua County rule signs — ubiquitous at businesses — on their booths.
“It’s kind of like the whole United States — some people are on one side, some on the other side and some kind of in the middle,” market manager Pam Worsham said. “There are some vendors that don’t believe that any government agency has the right to make that rule. Some are more vocal than others.”

Joan Canton, a SWAG co-founder, dies from cancer at age 79.

Canton, 79, died Saturday from cancer in Lake Worth.
A video presentation will honor Canton from 4-6 p.m. Friday at Forest Meadows Funeral Home at 725 NW 23rd Ave., said Joi Canton, one of Canton’s daughters. A graveside service is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Meadows Cemetery, 4100 NW 39th Ave.
She will be cremated and join her deceased husband, Alric Orlando Canton, in one grave so that they are always together, Joi Canton said.
Joan Canton, namesake of a playground in the SWAG area, who co-founded the organization with Dorothy Benson, Alison Law, Dr. Nancy Hardt and others, was instrumental in developing a plan to help neighborhoods along Southwest 20th and 24th avenues where residents live with disparities in education, health, income and opportunity.
