TriMet is finalizing the federally-required environmental assessment of the proposed Southwest Corridor MAX line, even though Metro President Lynn Peterson has said regional funding for the project will not be sought until 2022, at the earliest. TriMet had been planning a new light rail line between Portland and Bridgeport Village to be partly funded by Metro s $5.2 billion regional transportation funding measure on the November general election ballot. But voters in all three counties in Metro s jurisdiction defeated the measure, prompting the regional transit agency to stop working on the project. ....

Doug Kelsey, TriMet’s general manager, said Thursday he plans to retire March 5. The public transit executive said he would leave the tri-county agency when his current contract, a three-year deal, expires. In a statement, Kelsey thanked the Portland region, the transit service’s riders and its employees. “The pandemic and the economy may have put a damper on some of our efforts,” Kelsey said in a statement, “but this agency is ready when the time comes because we know how important transit is for our future.” ....

TriMet is grappling with how to improve safety on the regional transit system while honoring the racial equity demands of the social justice movement that erupted following the death of George Floyd. The agency s board of director spent more than three hours discussing the issues during an online retreat on Nov. 19. After reviewing the research and recommendations produced during a months-long community involvement process, the board committed to creating a Crisis Intervention Team to respond to those experiencing mental health issues, increasing the presence of a wide range of agency employees to assist riders on the system, and conducting agency-wide training on anti-racism, cultural competency, mental health, and de-escalation techniques. ....
