and last updated 2021-04-14 04:00:45-04
Today's Cool School is Magnolia Elementary in New Iberia. In early March, the PreK classes at Magnolia Elementary enjoyed story time. This was part of Read Across America Week. The students were able to enjoy stories read by residents of Maison du Teche Nursing Home, virtually! They all giggled together reading "The Foot Book: Dr. Seuss's Wacky Book of Opposites!
If you have a Cool School, let us know. Send Dave Baker an email to [email protected] Put Cool Schools in the subject line. Include a picture and a short story about why your school is cool!

Mom of Toddler Arrested After Cops Find Cocaine on a Dr. Seuss Book – RedState

Card image cap

A Florida mom’s in big trouble.
As relayed by The Smoking Gun, the mother of a toddler was arrested Wednesday after cops made a disconcerting discovery at her Largo home.
Among the purportedly seized substances: “a baggie of pills suspected to be MDMA.”
In case you’re unfamiliar, that’s short for Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, otherwise known as ecstasy or — for the
really cool kids — molly.
Speaking of, the New York Post notes a 3-year-old victim was involved.
Apropos — per the police report — the 24-year-old was taken into custody because she allegedly did “willfully or by culpable negligence fail to provide said child with the care, supervision and services necessary to maintain the child’s mental health that a prudent person would consider essential for the well-being of the said child, to wit: supervision without causing great bodily harm, permanent disability or permanent disfigurement to the said child.”

I'm A Black Mother And Educator. Here's Why I Let My Kids Read Racist Books

Card image cap

It was just after the news broke about Dr. Seuss that I pulled my kids onto the living room couch for family read-aloud time. I decided that we were going to read Dr. Seuss’ And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street. I cradled the book in my hands, feeling very much like I was palming explosive contraband.
The kids settled in on either side of me. My youngest, my sensitive nine-year-old son, snuggled close to my chest. My 15-year-old daughter raised her eyebrows as she looked down at my choice of books. She was aware of the announcement from the Dr. Seuss Foundation that it would be effectively “canceling” six of the author’s books due to their racist imagery.

Canceling books "is antithetical to learning and growth," the author argues. "We cannot eliminate the past. We must read these racist books and we must learn from them."

'Trump has achieved Voldemort status': Facebook blasted for censoring ex-president's interview

Facebook and Instagram pulled the clip because it 'featured Trump speaking' and the 'voice of Donald Trump'
Other network's phone interviews with Trump remain on the social media site
It is the first interview Trump has given on camera since he left the White House in January
He has been banned from Twitter, Facebook and Instagram since the January 6 riot at the Capitol
Now, Facebook says it is banning all content 'in the voice of' President Trump
Lara planned to upload the video at 9.30pm; at 9.26pm, her team received an email from Facebook
It warned that the video would be removed  if she uploaded it; at 9.51pm, they took it down

Obscure SF: The story (and myths) behind that strange tower on Telegraph Hill

Obscure SF: The story (and myths) behind that strange tower on Telegraph Hill
Pasquale's Tower, Telegraph Hill, San Francisco.Andrew Chamings
If you squint you can see it while driving over the Bay Bridge, nestled somewhere below Coit Tower on the southern slope of Telegraph Hill. A curious blue dome atop a cartoonishly narrow tower that looks like it belongs in a Dr. Seuss story. You can also see it from a small portion of Broadway in North Beach.
But that's about it; there aren't many other spots in San Francisco you can get a glimpse of Pasquale's Tower, which is odd considering how funny-looking and tall it is.

Lara Trump says big tech wants to 'erase Donald Trump'

Lara Trump slammed Instagram and Facebook removing her posts talking about her interview with Donald Trump, saying this happens 'in communist countries.'

Eric Swalwell's Next Act in Congress, After Trump

The Strange Life of a Congressional Trump Basher, After Trump
Representative Eric Swalwell built a public profile criticizing the ex-president. He’s still figuring out what’s next.

Eric Swalwell is going through some stuff. A lot of people are—and not just those who, like him, have grown a scraggly pandemic beard under their mask. Like many members of Congress, Swalwell is still working through the anger and trauma caused by the attack on the Capitol. Like so many Americans, he’s learning to live in a post-Trump United States, a post-Trump politics. He’s still trying to find his footing. At work, he looks around and doesn’t know how to talk to some of his colleagues—like today, in a tunnel in the Capitol basement, when he passes a white guy with gray hair and an official member-of-Congress pin on his lapel.

The Radical Left Will Stop At Nothing To Cancel Conservatives' Rights

The Radical Left Will Stop At Nothing To Cancel Conservatives’ Rights
The radical Left is at it again.
Cancel culture has said you can only read certain Dr. Seuss books to your grandchildren, and you can no longer give them a MISTER Potato Head. And heaven forbid if you let them watch Looney Tunes or Paw Patrol!
Liberals say that there’s no such thing as “cancel culture.” They say it’s the effect of public opinion or the result of a free market. And if you do find a liberal who will say something about it from their supposed “woke” moral high ground, they’ll call it “accountability culture.”

Donald Morrison: First, they came for Dr. Seuss …

In 1959, a New York publisher bet a writer named Theodor Geisel $50 that he couldn’t write a whole book using just 50 words. Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, won the wager.
“Green Eggs and Ham” went on to become one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, the saga of Sam-I-Am became engraved in the minds of generations, and Dr. Seuss became one of the century’s most beloved authors.
So, imagine my alarm when I learned from cable TV that Dr. Seuss had been “canceled.” Six of his works were being banned from the shelves over potentially offensive racial and ethnic depictions.

'Objectively offensive': Is Dr Seuss cancelled?

Dr Seuss Enterprises has announced they will stop publishing six books containing racist and insensitive imagery. The Washington Post's Philip Bump unpacks the decision.

Cancel culture? Meh. Librarians used to tough issues, so leaders say they'll seek a community 'balance.'
Dr. Seuss books always tickle
His publisher put some in a pickle
Decision to let books fade isn't so humdrum
Oh no! Oregon libraries face a conundrum
Attempts at mostly clever rhymes aside, when Dr. Seuss' publisher decided to no longer license or sell six particular titles, Oregon's public libraries didn't flinch. They mostly shrugged.
On March 2, Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced that six of the children's books would no longer be published or licensed because they include images and text that "portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong."

Editorial: What Biden can do about the border crisis
March 16, 2021
Migrant children and teenagers waiting to be processed near Midland, Texas, this week.Eli Hartman/Associated Press
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy took a break from reading Dr. Seuss to visit the U.S.-Mexico border Monday, but he was still speaking in the simplistic terms of children’s literature. During an appearance with other lawmakers in El Paso, McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, attempted to brand the latest surge of migrants the “Biden border crisis.”
McCarthy was right in one respect: The border is President Biden’s problem now. His administration is struggling to handle the influx of migrants arriving there, particularly the children among them, as competently and humanely as it should. But the idea that Biden created or even exacerbated the problem is as fictitious as “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Social Media Users Push to Cancel Miss Piggy In Wake of Pepé Le Pew Controversy
Miss Piggy finds herself in Twitter's crosshairs.
Justin Chan
Space Jam sequel, social media users are calling for the cancellation of another popular television character: Miss Piggy.
Users have taken to Twitter to sarcastically — and maybe even seriously — protest Miss Piggy's character, who they say is eerily similar to the
Looney Tunes skunk.
The push comes after
New York Times opinion columnist Charles M. Blow argued, in a piece about the removal of six Dr. Seuss books, that Pepé Le Pew "normalized rape culture." Blow also contended that Speedy Gonzales, another Looney Tunes character, had friends who "helped popularize the corrosive stereotype of the drunk and lethargic Mexicans."

Ted Cruz sells signed Dr. Seuss books, raising $125,000 in 24 hours

Senator Ted Cruz raised more than $125,000 selling signed copies of "Green Eggs and Ham."
Cruz said he was autographing the books to fight back against the "cancel culture mob."
"Lefties are losing their minds," he said on Twitter.
A donation site run by Ted Cruz was raising money by selling copies of "Green Eggs and Ham," which were signed by the senator.
"Lefties are losing their minds that I'm signing & sending copies of Green Eggs and Ham to anyone who donates $60 or more," the Texas senator said on Twitter late Friday. "We've raised $125k in just 24 hours!"

Read Across America Day: Local students celebrate all things Seuss

For 117 years of age, the great Dr. Seuss is surprisingly active.
Though Theodor Seuss Geisel died in 1991 at age 87, the passage of time, a pandemic and a historic ice storm didn’t stop students and staff across Killeen ISD from pausing to celebrate.
Mostly, the celebrations involved reading a book or classroom activities involving words. There were also bright colors, hats made of paper and lots of people dressed as fanciful creatures — all in all something the iconic author would likely appreciate.
At Douse Elementary School, kindergarten teacher Toishema Holly directed her students to spell three-letter words ending with the letters “at.”

Dr. Seuss banned? Elgin library will not remove Dr. Seuss books that will no longer be published

Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced it would quit publishing six books because of racial images deemed "hurtful."
The books have become very valuable, so the library will keep them at their information desk and allow people to look at them inside the library to keep the books from being stolen.
"Some of these are over $2,000," said Denise Raleigh, division chief public relations and development for the Elgin library.
"You know, it's well worth our time to keep those and to make sure that those connections and those discussions can, you know, can keep occurring," Raleigh said.
The Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin has four Dr. Seuss books that are no longer being published. The titles are, "If I Ran the Zoo," "And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street," "On Beyond Zebra!" and "The Cat's Quizzer."
