Gujarat to patent dragon fruit as 'kamalam' | India News

GANDHINAGAR: The BJP government in Gujarat has initiated the process of patenting the name of the variety of dragon fruit grown in Gujarat as “kamalam”, which is also the name of the state party headquarters. It means lotus — the symbol of Bharatiya Janata Party.
Addressing a press conference to announce the horticulture development mission, Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said, “We have named the dragon fruit grown in Gujarat as kamalam.”
When asked about the rationale behind rechristening the fruit, the CM said there was no political angle to the move. “Farmers call it kamalam (lotus) fruit in Gujarat, hence the government has named it so,” he said.

Gujarat government has decided to rename dragonfruit as Kamalam since its outer shape is similar to that of a lotus. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the name dragonfruit sounded inappropriate and clarified that there was nothing political about this decision.
Speaking at the launch of Chief Minister Horticulture Development Mission, Rupani said, "We have applied for the patent of the dragonfruit to be called Kamalam. But as of now, the Gujarat government has decided to call the fruit Kamalam." He added, "Even though the fruit is known as dragon fruit, it does not sound appropriate. The word Kamalam is a Sanskrit word and the fruit does have the shape of the lotus, so we have decided to call it Kamalam, and there's nothing political about it."

New Delhi:Â Twitter greeted Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani’s announcement of renaming the dragon fruit as it brings up associations with China with a characteristic outburst of memes and speculation on Wednesday, January 20.
On Tuesday, Rupani told reporters that the Gujarat government has decided to call the dragon fruit ‘kamalam’ and has applied for a patent.

Gujarat government has decided to rename Dragon Fruit to 'Kamalam'. According to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, the use of the word 'Dragon' is not suitable for a fruit hence the decision has been taken. Rupani said that since Dragon Fruit looks like a lotus flower, it shall be renamed to 'Kamalam' which is the Sanskrit word for it.
