Rescue work to save 41 workers trapped in a tunnel in India's Uttarakhand state has been delayed again because of a problem with the drilling machine.
Forty-one workers have been trapped in a tunnel in Uttarakhand state for the past 12 days.
Ambulances were on standby Thursday morning as Indian rescuers dug through the final metres of debris separating them from 41 workers trapped in a collapsed road tunnel for nearly two weeks.The workers were seen alive for the first time on Tuesday, peering into the lens of an endoscopic camera sent by rescuers down a thin pipe through which air, food, water and electricity are being delivered.
The rescue of 41 construction workers trapped nearly two weeks in a collapsed tunnel in northern India has been hindered again in the final stretch of digging, officials said Thursday. Special cutters have been arranged from New Delhi and Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand state, and efforts were being made to remove the metal obstruction to resume drilling, said Kirti Panwar, a state government spokesman. The drilling machine is being repaired and will be realigned to resume drilling, said Devendra Patwal, a disaster management official.
The workers have been inside the tunnel since 12 November after a part of it caved in due to a landslide.
