Shortly after 7pm on January 9, Gardaí in Rathkeale received a report that a car had gone into the River Deel at Newbridge in Askeaton, Co. Limerick. Gardaí were told that the car had skidded off the road and ended up in the river, with water rising into the car. The water had risen to waist level and the significant current in the river resulted in the driver not been unable to open the door of the car.

The alarm was raised shortly 7pm on Saturday when gardai were alerted to reports that  a car had skidded off the road and entered the river at Newbridge, Askeaton. According to gardai, the water had risen to waist level by the time they arrived and the significant current in the river meant the driver was not able to open the door of the car. 

Motorists have been urged drivers to take extra care after a car skidded off the road and plunged into the River Deel in Co Limerick. Two gardaí waded into the freezing water to rescue the driver who had become trapped in her car due to strong currants in the river. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, thanked her rescuers, gardaí Michael Hally and Andrew Maher, as well as the ambulance and fire service personnel who attended the scene. “Without their help, who knows what could have happened to me,” she said.
