The state Legislature started its new session Wednesday, but Opening Day ceremonies were muted.
HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii made history on Thursday by becoming the first state to declare a climate emergency.
Although the resolution passed by the state Legislature is symbolic, it acknowledges that climate change is an immediate threat.
The resolution calls on government to make choices that will enable a more sustainable future. It goes as far as to ask for a ban on public and private investments that would make the climate worse.

Meet Chanté Davis, a youth climate activist and champion for change

Meet Chanté Davis, a youth climate activist and champion for change
Passionate and purposeful, 17-year-old Chanté Davis is an environmental justice activist who understands the power of youth voices, especially those of people of color.
Through her activism and campaigns, Chanté helps to raise the voices of BIPOC youth so that they are heard and connected with the movement. This Black History Month, we caught up with Chanté to learn about her campaign, role models and advice for teens who want to get involved with climate justice.
Getting started in the climate justice movement
Chanté started learning about the environment in her elementary school years. "I went to a green school and they talked about recycling, we had a wind turbine, and they talked about water usage and runoff and pollution," she shares. "I officially became an activist through Ocean Heroes, which was cofounded in 2017 by Captain Planet Foundation and Lonely Whale."

A recent statewide survey found 91% of participants plan to get the COVID-19 vaccine. State officials say it's a strong indication that attitudes about the vaccine are rapidly shifting since vaccinations began in mid-December.
The survey was commissioned by the state Department of Health. According to its results, 55% plan to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible, while 36% say will wait before receiving their vaccination.
Previous survey conducted by the DOH and University of Hawaii before the vaccinations were being administered showed about 50% of residents would accept the COVID-19 vaccine. The other half indicated they did not plan to get vaccinated or were still undecided.

Hawaii lawmakers introduce bill lowering voting age to 16

Hawaiian lawmakers introduced a bill this week that would lower the voting age from 18 to 16-years-old.
The legislation – drafted with the input of young people – was one of 20 bills introduced by members of Hawaii’s Keiki Caucus, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.

If passed, House Bill 449 and Senate Bill 824, would amend Hawaii’s constitution to allow 16-year-olds to vote in state and local elections.
Dyson Chee, an 18-year-old who advocated for the measure, said during a live press conference that one of the first things young people learn about the founding of the U.S.A. is the idea of "no taxation without representation."
