Summer fun and more happening this weekend


This weekend brings the first day of the summer season, as well as Father’s Day, so it’s a perfect time to get out and celebrate with one of the many events happening in the area. Run or walk a 5K race, catch a movie on the lawn or at the drive-in, enjoy the air-conditioning while visiting a museum, or find a gift for dad at one of the local farmers markets. The H-E-B Summer Run to Fun 5K will be at 8 a.m. June 19 at South Park, 2602 Dennis St., Copperas Cove. Registration is $30 per runner and T-shirts will be provided to the first 150 participants. Go to https://copperascove.com/heb-summer-run-to-fun/ to register.

New Killeen restaurant could open this month

The new Back Porch Drafthouse in Killeen could open later this month as it is set to replace the former Logan’s Roadhouse that closed in April of last year.

Starbucks in Harker Heights short staffed, no longer open weekday mornings


The Starbucks in Harker Heights has gone down to limited hours during the week as a result of short staffing, a worker at the store said.
A piece of paper was taped to the door of the Starbucks on Tuesday showing the shop’s new hours.
The shop, 100 E. Central Texas Expressway, will now be open from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
On Monday, the Herald was sent a photo from the same Starbucks with a sign on the door saying the store was temporarily closed.

What's happening in Central Texas this Easter weekend | Local News


There are plenty of safe, socially-distanced events happening this weekend to have some Easter or springtime fun in the area. Head to one of the family-friendly egg hunting events, enjoy being outside at a local farm, or check out a farmers market. More information on these and more below.

Stonetree Golf Club, 1600 Stonetree Drive, Killeen, is hosting the Stonetree Classic Tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. April 2. This event will include two-person teams, 27 holes, and three formats (Scramble, Best Ball, and Alternate Shot). Price is $60 for members, $75 for guests, and includes greens fee, cart fee, range balls, and lunch. Call 254-501-6575 for more information. The golf club also hosts its Beer and Nine event every Thursday. For $20 per person, this event includes nine holes with a free beer of choice, two-person scramble, and shotgun at 5 p.m.

Grand jury indicts Fort Hood soldier on murder charge


A Fort Hood soldier was indicted by a Bell County grand jury on a murder charge after police said he choked a woman to death at a Killeen hotel in 2019.
Cory Latrell Grafton, 20, has been held in the Bell County Jail on a $1 million bond since his arrest on Nov. 4, 2020. Grafton is a soldier with the 1st Cavalry Division.
He is accused of killing 32-year-old Chelsea L. Cheatham on June 3, 2019. She had been found unconscious and not breathing at the Killeen Days Inn, 1602 E. Central Texas Expressway. At the time of the incident, it was unknown if her death was by natural causes and an investigation was initiated. KPD detectives later received the results of the autopsy and it was determined the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The Phantom Warrior Four-Person Golf Scramble will begin at noon Feb. 26 at the Courses of Clear Creek, 52381 Battalion Ave., Fort Hood.
