Letters: time for Starmer to pump up the volume | Keir Starmer

Enough rhetoric: if the Labour leader wants to create a better future, he must act

There is little to object to in Keir Starmer’s article; there is even less to be inspired by, or to set the blood racing (“We must be bold and end the idea that inequality is inevitable. Let’s get Britain working again”, Opinion). Faced with a government doing more to dismantle democracy than any in living memory and abusing its position to favour friends and supporters, surely this is a time to stand tall and proud for the values that matter.

Well said, Tom Kibasi (Keir Starmer’s leadership needs an urgent course correction, 16 February). As vice-chair of South East Cornwall constituency Labour party (CLP) for five years, I can testify to the demoralising effect that Keir Starmer’s attack on Jeremy Corbyn has had on local activists. I voted for Corbyn twice. I was never a member of Momentum and I recognise that Corbynism failed as an electoral project.
I didn’t vote for Starmer but I was happy to see him elected leader. I thought he was the best-placed candidate to heal the divisions within the party. How wrong I was. Like many of my colleagues on the CLP, I now have very little enthusiasm for the party, I am no longer active in the CLP and I am concentrating on politics at a local level as a parish councillor.

Is the SNP's 'magic money tree' going to pay for a four-day working week?

Unions, think tanks and businesses are calling for the First Minister of Scotland to follow Spain's lead on a four-day work week

Here in Scotland, we are fortunate to be awash with money. With our public funds brimming over, during an unprecedented crisis. That, at any rate, is the impression anyone would get from the proposal by interested parties for the Scottish government to provide a subsidy to enable them to introduce a four-day working week with no loss of pay.
This proposal was, unsurprisingly, passed at the SNP conference and is being supported by the Scottish Trades Union Congress, as well as the Circle Scotland CIC and the Autonomy and New Economics Foundation think tank.
