New York's favorite organist: Paul Cartier – The Statesman

Live entertainment has emerged as a significant casualty during the COVID-19 pandemic. Athletes, in particular, have largely performed in front of empty audiences for the past year.
Long Island’s Paul Cartier, who works as the organist for both the New York Islanders and Yankees, saw his work dry up in the 362-day period between the last time fans were allowed inside Nassau Coliseum. But as an organist, he’s aware of the role that his job entails in creating a great sporting experience for fans.
“When you went to [Yankee Stadium], as soon as you heard the organ start, with Bob Sheppard saying, ‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,’ you knew it was time for the real stuff to start,” Cartier said.

Yankees' long history with 'New York, New York'

share-square-942045
The first few notes of Frank Sinatra’s “Theme From New York, New York” produce a Pavlovian response for anyone who has spent a few hours at Yankee Stadium. Cymbals crash, brass horns blare, and you can envision John Sterling whirling in the broadcast booth: “Yankees win! Th-e-e-e-e-e Yankees win!”
Sinatra recorded the song in 1979, two years after Liza Minnelli’s version served as the theme for Martin Scorsese’s film “New York, New York.” But Sinatra’s link to the Yankees organization traces back decades, including a chance dugout encounter with Lou Gehrig before Game 4 of the 1939 World Series. Over the years, Sinatra was also photographed with greats like Joe DiMaggio and Phil Rizzuto.
