So, the thought of living in a retirement home makes Edie feel that she will be missing so much from her life.

But the global event, after being delayed for a year, should still deliver plenty of must-see TV. As usual, things get rolling with the opening ceremony, and because of the vast time difference, NBC will broadcast the festivities live in the morning (7 a.m., Friday) for the first time ever. But for viewers wanting to stick to traditional evening viewing, the networkâs âcomprehensiveâ prime-time broadcast will feature special coverage of Team USA, along with the performances, pageantry and Parade of Nations. (7:30 p.m., NBC).

The Tailings follows the events that take place after the death of teenage Jas’s father. The tight-knit community are quick to deem the death as an accident, spiralling Jas to undertake her own investigation. The two slowly develop a mutual trust and as secrets are exposed, the truth becomes impossible to ignore. The poignant performances by emerging stars Tegan Stimson (Jas) and Mabel Li (Ruby) are an intimate portrayal of the human experience with grief, guilt and loss from the diverse perspective of those living on the margins both socially and geographically. The series champions female perspectives, centred around the experiences of its female protagonists and helmed by an all-female lead creative team under the talented direction of Stevie Cruz-Martin (Pulse), produced by Liz Doran (Please Like Me, Molly) and written by first time scriptwriter and Tasmanian schoolteacher Caitlin Richardson. The End, a 10-part series, finally premieres on Fox Showcase on Tuesday after being filmed on the Gold Coast about three years ago.
It features a stellar cast, including a hilarious Dame Harriet Walter (

Foxtel's black comedy The End embraces the darkest of moments

At the beginning of
The End, the exceptional new Australian comic-drama about how we confront the difficult realities of both life and death, Edie Henley (Harriet Walter) does her best to take her own life. The sequence has a shocking alacrity and a clockwork mirthfulness – you’re jolted upright, but compelled to laugh at Edie’s exasperation when she realises she’s battered but definitely still breathing. It’s a highwire act of tonality: the series is uncompromising, but its blows are illuminating.
A widower and breast cancer survivor, Edie is shipped off to the Gold Coast and a place in a retirement village that’s a gilded hospice secured by her daughter, Kate Brennan (Frances O’Connor), a doctor who specialises in palliative care. Kate is “ethically bound” to keep her patients alive, even when they want to die, while the indignant Edie is insistent that she’s preparing for another go at suicide. This stand-off soon comes with euthanasia drugs, and startling examples of how some in their difficult final days see death as a release.
