1M fully-vaxxed Cebuanos big boost to local economy: exec

Project Balik Buhay chairman Edmun Liu. (PNA file photo) CEBU CITY - More than a million residents in Cebu province have been vaccinated against coronavirus disease (Covid-19), a milestone which an official said would translate to a PHP390-billion full-year boost to the local economy. Visayas Vaccination Operations Center (VVOC) spokesperson, Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, said about 1.128 million individuals in the province have received their first dose while those fully vaccinated have reached a total of 1.001 million as of Monday. A VVOC report said a total of about a million doses of vaccines have been administered in the province. It also said "One Cebu", composed of the towns and component cities of the province and the three highly-urbanized cities, has between 3.5 million and 3.6 million population eligible for vaccination. Edmun Liu, Project Balik Buhay chairman, said the milestone in Cebu's vaccination since the rollout started in March this year would mean a boost to the efforts to recover the local economy. "Cebu has an estimated per capita income, as of 2020 PSA (Philippine Statistics Authority) report, of at least USD7,800. That's equivalent to around PHP390,000 average income per year, or roughly PHP32,500 average income per month," Liu said. He said this "market of 1.0-million fully vaccinated Cebu residents" would translate to a total spending capacity of PHP32.5-billion per month, or PHP390-billion per year. As of October 4 data, Mandaue City topped other localities in Cebu in reaching population protection, as it fully inoculated 60.28 percent or 170,303 individuals who are eligible for vaccination with 185,319 having received the first dose. Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino, the presidential assistant for the Visayas, welcomed this development even as he urged others to get vaccinated as soon as possible. He commended the efforts of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases-Visayas, the Department of Health, LGUs, front-liners, the Project Balik Buhay and medical organizations for working together to reach the milestone.
