THE HAGUE: Police arrested more than 800 people worldwide in a huge global sting involving encrypted phones that were secretly planted by the FBI, law enforcement agencies said on Tuesday.
Officers were able to read the messages of global underworld figures in around 100 countries as they plotted drug deals, arms transfers and gangland hits on the compromised ANOM devices.
The evidence from “Operation Trojan Shield” prevented around 100 murders and foiled several large-scale drug shipments, said officials from the FBI, the EU’s police agency Europol and other countries as far afield as Australia.

Is it legal to pay a cyber ransom in NZ? The surprising answer

Is it legal to pay a cyber ransom in NZ? The surprising answer

Today's hackers often want money to give you back your files (after they've stolen them or encrypted them in a "ransomware" attack) or to cease a DDoS attack (a distributed denial-of-service attack where an army
of bots try to connect to your site at once, rendering it inaccessible to regular punters).
And their efforts are only escalating, because governments enable ransomware extortionists in three ways: failing to regulate cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, giving hackers an easy, anonymous method of being paid; authorities' underfunded and uncoordinated efforts to catch offenders (we compare particularly poorly against Australia, as detailed within this feature); and maintaining the legality of paying up.

As the company could not be contacted,

A Telstra spokesperson said in response: "The company is a Telstra dealer who supports Telstra products and specialist business requirements for some of our enterprise and mid-Market customers.
"We’ve been in contact with the dealer and have been told some 'high-level' Telstra business customer information, such as mobile phone numbers, may have been accessed from its order fulfilment system.

Detectives found what might be a modern-day treasure map in an encrypted messaging service after the son of an alleged cocaine importer was arrested.
But instead of digging up gold or silver bullion, police found garbage bags and a cocaine-riddled vitamin bottle, the High Court at Auckland heard today.
